Purists? I take it that means you're impure? The lib phrases are pathetic. We call it conservatism. If we were purists, we would never have voted for Bush in 2004, given spending, illegal immigration, and so forth. But there is a point where you draw the line, if you are a conservative, or principled, for that matter. Where do you draw the line?

You aren't on FR enough, to know the slang, Mark. Would you rather I had used DONNER PARTY CONSERVATIVES? Or, how about the old standby UNAPPEASEABLES?

Don't you dare take umbrage over a FR slang use, which you so patently do not understand. It isn't a "lib phrase" at all and just because you feel angry and set upon, on this thread, do not take it out on me!

For your edification.........we here at FR use the "purist" to describe those supposed Conservatives, for whom, nobody is PURE CONSERVATIVE enough and who would much rather lose every single election, than, *cough*, sully or compromise their, *cough*, oh so vaunted "principles". These are the same people who back every single person, who hasn't a chance to EVER be elected to anything at all, but if that would ever happen, then, in a matter of months of weeks, they wouldn't be good enough either.

I have been a CONSERVATIVE for long than you've been out of diapers. I have lots of principle's too. Where do I draw the line? Lots of places and for starters, never listening to your radio show again.

I have been madder than a wet hen, at some things that President Bush the younger, the elder, Reagan, Ford, and Nixon have said and done. None of that has ever kept me from supporting the GOP with time, money, and effort. But the tiniest of tiny sliver of an iota of something, DOES keep FR's "purists" from doing ALL of that!

I have been trying to decide for the last half an hour if I should post to you, and I have decided that I will. You may take it for what it is worth, or send me packing as a stupid naif.

I did not have you pegged as an elitist, Mr. Levin. But after this episode, and watching your responses here...I'm not so sure and more than a bit disappointed.

FWIW, the last straw for me when I ditched my liberal world view (shortly after leaving the warm embrace of academia and all that had to offer) was the irritating pretensions of the elitist left. I have the same disgust with the elitist right. This nomination has broken that particular rift in the GOP wide open.

I do not know what is going to happen. But I can tell you that as a solid conservative...I am NEVER going to side with elitists because they understand what it means to be "qualified."

Time will tell us if the President knew what he was doing. I was initially disappointed, but after doing a bit of research am more positive. But it will never take away my disappointment with the elitists on my side of the divide, even if I decide, in the end that you are correct.
