OU bomber had huge explosive stash; Mystery remains over suicide outside Sooners game
World Net Daily ^ | 10/3/05

© 2005 WorldNetDaily.com Local and federal agents were carting away what was described as a huge cache of explosives from the apartment of the 21-year-old student who blew himself up outside the stadium where 84,000 watched a Sooners football game.

Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., died in the explosion, according to FBI officials.

Investigators believe Hinrichs detonated a bomb about 8 p.m. Saturday, just 100 yards away from the packed football stadium.

Police were overheard telling residents it would take "several trips and could take up to 24 hours" to remove it all, according to the Daily Oklahoman.

A canister trailer used for detonating or transporting potentially explosive material was being used to haul items away.

Officials said Hinrichs' motive for blowing himself up Saturday near the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium during the second quarter of OU's game against Kansas State remains under investigation.

OU President David Boren said Hinrichs was a student "who had very, serious personal problems that led to this tragic death."

Because of what happened, Boren said, the FBI had taken over the investigation.

Boren said the student had explosives strapped to his body.

Investigators would not say whether they believe Hinrichs intended to go inside the stadium before the detonation happened.

See my post #160 from Channel 4 news tonight. It defies belief IMHO.

Less than impressed with Hamilton's statement -- you are right that he is clueless.

I find the comments from his family extremely sad. My youngest is 21, away at college, and I can't imagine not talking to him or seeing him for any length of time. And if he EVER indicated that he was depressed or unhappy with life or whatever this kid told his family, I would hoof it up there in a flash to see for myself what the problem was. I just don't understand the lack of caring. He seems like a perfect target for the terrorists among us. Disgusting!!

This media blackout is beginning to border on the ridiculous and criminal.

From Channel 4 news tonight it looks like the FBI is totally tight lipped about this. I am not sure it is a good idea because any thinking person around here is not buying the spin by the OU Administration.

I agree. Even little green footballs isn't blogging on this. And they are all about covering terrorism and national security.

If someone would like to give me a brief synopsis I'll put it up on my blog. I've written on this the last two days over at route-82.blogspot.com

They really are trying to obfuscate as much as possible aren't they. I mean they say they aren't really sure it's him? this after they've told the family - the family has given interviews, and planned a service. Pictures have been released, they've searched his apartment etc.

Now they're trying to backpedal wherever they can, even on stuff they've already announced.

This has gone way past the norm with media blackout.

I didn't do too well when I saw the picture of them padlocking the gates Saturday night so we couldn't leave. What if there had been another bomb in the stadium and the gates were padlocked?

How were they so sure he hadn't been able to plant more bombs in the stadium when they started padlocking right after the bombing?

Saying that he used hydrogen peroxide to make the bomb. I am sure the Norman cops took all the hydrogen peroxide out to their disposal range and blew it up at 9:30 last night so it shook my front window from five miles away. (sarcasm -- extreme sarcasm)

This is absolutely ridiculous! They aren't even sure it was him??? A funeral service has already been planned for 2pm on Friday in CO Springs. A different article I read reported that the remains would be cremated (am looking through my history listing for that article). Kind of hard to cremate the remains if they are in the examiner's office. This is starting to stink to high heaven...

They padlocked the gates? All of them? That is creepy! And dangerous! What if people had paniced after hearing the bomb go off or after the word spread that it WAS a bomb? Total mass hysteria.

I am with your family.

When I heard them say they don't know if it was an accident or suicide and haven't done DNA to determine if it was him, I sat her incredulous. Then they said it might be months before the body (what is left) is released.

Padlocked the gates? How many laws did that break?

The statements being released get more bizarre. I hope it is ruse to not impede the investigation because if it is not, someone needs to answer for some of the statements made.

I sat here stunned when the reporter said that. DNA had not been done to determine if it really was this kid.

What were the wooden matches for? When I read about them being scattered in the area last night, I assumed it was to , er, "mark" where the body parts were strewn.

Some kid had a camera on him and took pictures of them padlocking the gates and they wouldn't let him out -- think he belongs to the OU Daily so he ran around to get out a gate before it was padlocked and made it. I am now getting outright disgusted at Boren.

What if there was a panic is right?

I have no idea how many laws they broke. Until about 20 minutes I had no idea they had padlocked the gates to keep us in -- I thought they just shut them but I saw these huge links of chain with a big padlock in the pictures as they interviewed the kid with the camera and showed his pictures.

When you examine the facts of the case...its hard to come to another conclusion. The cops will say "no note"....no claim or blame. But I suspect each day that passes will bring out one more bit of the picture. MSM will likely have to admit something by Sunday...that we had a John Walker Lindh on our own territory...and he breathes no more.
