The administration of President George W. Bush broke the law as it resorted to illegal "covert propaganda" in trying to sell its key education initiative to the public, US congressional investigators have found.

The finding, made public by the Government Accountability Office added to a plethora of big and small ethics scandals besetting the administration and its top Republican allies and putting them on the defensive one year before congressional elections.

The investigation was ordered by Democratic Senators Edward Kennedy and Frank Lautenberg earlier this year, in the wake of reports the Education Department had paid newspaper columnist and television commentator Armstrong Williams thousands of dollars to help promote the No Child Left Behind Law.

More "covert propaganda" links. Guess this passes for "doing the people's work" and justifies more than a few salaries. Maybe we are getting all the government that we're paying for.

I think the correct psychological term is "projection." The corrupt and incompetent Democrats project THEIR qualities onto the Republicans. My bet is they realize that the corruption of Blanco and Nagin will start to emerge...as well as Jon Corzine during his Governor's race..and many others. This is an offensive (in BOTH senses of the word) move by the Dems

Interesting, since No Child Left Behind was a Kennedy initiative.

Huh? It was sponsored in the House by Republican Rep. John A. Boehner, and cosponsored by Tom Delay, John Culberson, Richard Baker, Dennis Hastert, Henry Brown, Jim Kolbe, and a host of other republican reps.

I thank you for taking the time to reply to my questions.

CUT from an interesting article..and common sense.

An "interesting" article from the boston globe...huh, ok.

I do not think for one iota of a second, that President Bush, or anyone in his family, needs the slime of the toon scum. Both of those scum suckers have done NOTHING but trash my President at home, and more importantly, abroad.

As far as common sense...I must not have any. Common sense tells me - If you run with the dogs, you're gonna get fleas.

"And The GOP is handing over 14 BILLION DOLLARS to Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley so he can add ONE runway at O'Hare."

Good God. I'll bet an honest contractor could do it for well under one twenty-eighth that sum.

"The corrupt and incompetent Democrats project THEIR qualities onto the Republicans."

As H. L. Mencken said, "It is hard to believe that a man is telling the truth when you know that you would lie if you were in his place."

Liberals lie all the time, so they presume everyone else does too.

Your explanation is nicey nice.

Mine is more sinister and politically driven.

Mine:

After GW1, GWHB invited numerous Iraqi ex-military to settle in the US. Many of them settled in the Kansas City area.

Murrah bombing happened on BJC's watch. McVey and Nichols were caught. However, many reports indicated Middle Eastern persons associated with McVey and Nichols, perhaps even the morning of the Murrah bombing. Some of those reports indicate that those ME men were ---- Iraqi. Where was Nichols from? Kansas. What else is in Kansas? Kansas City. hmmmmm.

In order to cover that he (BJC) allowed foreign terrorists to strike in the heartland, BJC, to cover his own incompetence, ditched the ME connection to Murrah and blamed Rush Limbaugh. Thusly, BJC, covered his own rear and simultaneously covered up for Daddy Bush's allowing the ex-Iraqi military to settle in the Kansas City area.

In order to 'maintain', GWB has to continue the cover up, for the sake of his father's legacy. And in so doing, he has to cover for BJC.

Ain't politics wonderful.

Sorry, wrong Kennedy. http://www.education-world.com/a_issues/issues309.shtml

The bill was officially sponsored by Republicans, but there were plenty of DemonRats who thought that NCLB is just great and that the only problem with it is that not enough money is being spent on it.

According to Sean Hannity, Kennedy said 'Pass NCLB and you'll get your private school vouchers,' a pledge that he and his fellow DemonRats later reneged on.

Totally agree with your accessment, however..in Politics " you cannot burn your bridges "..it would be great if one could and/or stand on principle alone.

An "interesting" article from the Boston globe...huh, ok.

It may be from the Globe, but shows why the Bush Family and the Clintons have some need for one another.

Now, if Bush had better advisers on when to act and what to say on many "unfortunate" incidences that have occurred during his Presidency (does this guy live under bad karma or what?)..he would not be going to the Clinton's for any PR support whatsoever.

If Bush got rid of half the people around him and would do what he does best..speak forthright to the people-where he does shine if you personally have ever seen him speak; he would be much better off and not have to seek assistance from the Ex-President.

I agree this also helps Hillary come election time displaying her as more mainstream and not a Michael Moore or "Hi, My Name Is" [Ronnie] Earl[e]" groupie.

How much can you take from the Devil before your chips come due.

It may be from the Globe, but ........

it is still spinning yet another story trying to make it stick to President Bush, with the help of the dumbed down populace.

" you cannot burn your bridges "

I am not asking the President to "burn bridges," I am asking him to keep that vile excuse of an ex, impeached thing, out of my face and away from himself, lest he be contaminated.

Also, we have many Iraqis living here. Are you trying to say all our immigration problems and immigrants are GWHB's fault?

We're getting a little bizarre in our revisionism around here. With a republican controlled congress, senate, and executive branch, a White House proposed initiative (see http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/education/), a republican house sponsored and cosponsored bill (see http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d107:H.R.1:), and with President Bush signing that bill into law on January 8, 2002 (see http://www.ed.gov/nclb/landing.jhtml?src=pb), we now point to a news article where Kennedy "agrees on the need for education reform" to claim that the No Child Left Behind act is the democrat's tar-baby.

Well, I guess the party in power gets to both write the laws and re-write the history as it pleases.
