Intelligent Design Advocates Fight Back
Associated Press ^ | September 29. 2005 | JOHN HANNA

A group of Nobel Prize winners should have done more homework before criticizing proposed science standards in Kansas, advocates of the guidelines said in a letter Thursday.

Intelligent design advocates pushing new standards, which would expose students to more criticism of evolution, say the laureates' complaints are an attempt to suppress debate on the issue.

The letter was signed by Bill Harris, a professor of medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Greg Lassey, a former middle school science teacher, who helped draft the disputed language.

"We all want good standards," the letter said. "However, demeaning rhetoric that does not address specifics but serves only to belittle and misrepresent the changes is not helpful."

Earlier this month, 38 laureates, including prominent chemists, physicists and medical experts, asked the State Board of Education to reject the proposed standards.

The laureates, led by Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel, said evolution is the foundation of biology and that it has been bolstered by DNA studies.

Many scientists see intelligent design as another form of creationism, which the Supreme Court has banned from public schools.

Intelligent design theorists believe the complexity of the natural world cannot be explained except by attributing creation to some higher intelligence.

The Kansas board expects to vote this year on the standards, which will be used to develop tests for students but would allow local boards to decide how science is taught.

"The laureates, led by Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel, said evolution is the foundation of biology and that it has been bolstered by DNA studies."

Is this the same Elie Wiesel that instructed President Reagan not to attend a memorial in Eastern Europe, prior to the fall of the USSR?

I had to do some searching but I did find an anti-Reagan site that uses Mr. Wiesel in a paragraph.

As Elie Wiesel has written, Reagan's 1985 visit to a German cemetery where Waffen-SS troops were buried "wounded" Jews all over the world. ("Schism From Administration Lingered For Years," The Washington Post, June 9, 2004)

Here is the site:

If someone were to be in a place with no evidence of human life, and then stumble upon a television set or a laptop computer, they would never say that these items invented themselves.

Well, the life-sustaining ecosystem of the earth, even the simplist plants, are far more intricate and complex than even the most advanced computers. So ruling out intelligent design just doesn't make any sense.

Maybe its necessary...if certainly feels like ID has been taking punches all week.

You noticed that too, huh? :-)

The Dover Panda Trial is not going well for ID. Your lawyers seem to be truly incompetent, and the judge (a GWB appointee, so you can't claim he's another damn liberal) has shown a great deal of latitude to the ACLU in presenting its case, while denying most defense motions. Of course, your side hasn't been up to bat yet, and things may change, but we're running up a big lead.

The funny thing is, in his substantive point here, Harris is correct. The Kansas standards do not teach ID. However, they dictate that students be taught a number of demonstrably false propositions about evolution.

I've seen you all say on your profile page or somewhere else that you might start revealing keyword abusers in open forum, but this is the first time I've seen it done.

"If someone were to be in a place with no evidence of human life, and then stumble upon a television set or a laptop computer, they would never say that these items invented themselves."

There would be a 100% probablility that that certain "someone" would find evidence of human life along with the tv or laptop.
