3 in 82nd Airborne Say Beating Iraqi Prisoners Was Routine
NY Times ^ | 9/23/05 | Eric Schmitt

Three former members of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division say soldiers in their battalion in Iraq routinely beat and abused prisoners in 2003 and 2004 to help gather intelligence on the insurgency and to amuse themselves. The new allegations, the first involving members of the 82nd Airborne, are contained in a report by Human Rights Watch. The 30-page report does not identify the troops, but one is Capt. Ian Fishback, who has presented some of his allegations in letters this month to top aides of two senior Republicans on the Senate Armed Services Committee, John Warner of Virginia and John McCain of Arizona. Captain Fishback approached the Senators' offices only after he tried to report the allegations to his superiors for 17 months.

Captain Fishback and two sergeants described systematic abuses of Iraqi prisoners, including beatings, exposure to extremes of hot and cold, stacking in human pyramids and sleep deprivation.

In one incident, the Human Rights Watch report states, an off-duty cook broke a detainee's leg with a metal baseball bat. Detainees were also stacked, fully clothed, in human pyramids and forced to hold five-gallon water jugs with arms outstretched or do jumping jacks until they passed out. "We would give them blows to the head, chest, legs and stomach, and pull them down, kick dirt on them," one sergeant told Human Rights Watch researchers. "This happened every day."

"Some days we would just get bored, so we would have everyone sit in a corner and then make them get in a pyramid. This was before Abu Ghraib but just like it. We did it for amusement."

He said he acted under orders from military intelligence personnel to soften up detainees, whom the unit called persons under control, or PUC's, to make them more cooperative during formal interviews.

Jr. High PE?

A broken leg on one potential terrorist is worth more than the potential deaths of anyone? I'm a big fan of erroring on the side of caution.

Ah, another abuse story from the New York Times, timed perfectly to coincide with anti-war Saturday.

The Times and Cindy must be furious with Rita. They had everything ready to go - the polls, the hundreds of thousands of marchers, the routine Americans, the grieving mothers, and now, the abusing soldiers. And.Rita had to ruin everything!!!

Funny how the Slimes has those Bush bashing stories perfectly set to go, isn't it???? LOL. I think their announcement of labor cuts show how well that strategery is working for 'em.

The Old Gray Whore, as someone on another thread called it.

The real issue to me is if they were able to obtain any good intel from these "abuse" techniques.

Nothing to report on the orderly evacuation, of the splendid job done by Republican governed states, unlike the disaster democrats caused, so lets bash Bush this way.

And the NYT wonders why it going bankrupt. it should be bankrupt to match it's moral bankruptcy.

I could accept this kind of treatment easier than beheadings and other forms of execution. Do you really think our soldiers would be treated humanely by the terrorists if they were captured?

As far as I am concerned, they should be beaten as long and hard as necessary to get the required intel from them. What happens to them after that is not even a concern. These dirt bags are not covered by the Geneva Convention, and should not be afforded such treatment.

I don't have a problem with this.

If our guys get caught by the enemy, they can expect to be dragged through the streets on film, murdered, and strung up and burned to death.

Our enemies should expect no less.

Some people seem to think that our enemies should be sent to a luxury resort where they are given more comforts than their own cozy cave.

I'm of the opinion that they should at least expect an a$$-kicking, especially if it helps us get information out of them that will save our boys' lives.

They should all also have to wear panties on their heads and have their Korans flushed down the toilets.

I don't believe this story for a minute.

Bottom line, is that the NY Times is made up of a bunch of Commies, the Rat party is also made up of a bunch of Commies.
