Posted on 09/21/2005 4:19:11 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous and large Category Five Hurricane Rita is churning westward across the Gulf of Mexico toward Texas. Air Force Reconnaissance indicated the central pressure has dropped to 904mb, making Rita the fifth most intense hurricane ever in the Atlantic Basin.

Hurricane and Tropical Storm Watches have been issued from Northern Mexico through the South Louisiana coastline. Galveston TX used school buses to evacuate residents. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations are in effect along the Texas coastline.

It's true that's a corrupt gif (as I'm posting) but I noticed several hours ago that Rita took a more abrupt turn to the northwest than the forecast track would indicate. More importantly, you can check out several of the leading models here, and they are in fact now veering toward the TX-LA border.

Significant, indeed.

It puts Houston proper on the west side of the eye. . . but a heck of a lot closer to it.

Well, that model map covers all of Houston metro, the rest of coastal LA not affected by Katrina, and most of the offshore oil and gas ops. Did I niss anything?

PS. The XTRP line on that map, is a direct line in the direction that the hurricane is moving at that time. Based on this radar loop it seems that it should now be pointing up near Galveston. In other words, it seems the trajectory is turning swiftly. That being said, it's hard to be sure because it's only the last two or three frames and they flash by quick..

La/Tx border area SIGNIFICANTLY affected. Tremendous surges in the sabine bay area. Lake Charles needs to pay attetion.

Thanks for the tip. I will probably leave late Thursday night or very early Friday morning. Too much traffic on the roads right now. Besides, the storm seems to be heading north, so we may be able to stay here after all.

Get out. Seems to me that these things have a way of swinging east just before landfall.

Katrina did it. So did Ivan, if I recall right.

I, too, noticed a more northerly track on the satellite, than the NHC had predicted it would continue west for awhile longer.
