Can you imagine how difficult it is, though, to fill ANY position in Washington?
Requires so much knowledge, experience, ability to direct/work well with others - face enemy fire with aplomb! - one who will not undermine you politically or otherwise - endless requirements.

To Bush's credit are Condi Rice and Bolton and John Roberts.
We soon will know his nomination to fill O'Connors' slot on the Supreme Court!

Yes, all true. But the fact is there are lots more qualified people to do disaster relief than the FEMA managers.

As people outside the beltway may not be aware, a lot of very good senior FEMA managers with a lot of credentials left in disgust when too many political hacks joined up.

I think Pres. Bush has made a lot of good appointments. I'm not generally down on him or his choice of leaders, as evidenced by my consistent strong support in these quarters for his Supreme Court nominee (which, the record will show, I predicted he'd nominate before many here knew his name).

I just thing it is an inexcusable disgrace to dump a lot of political hacks in FEMA. And there's no amount of "everyone else did it under the Democrats" or "the Democratic local officials' response to FEMA sucked too" that will excuse it in my book. FEMA's response is a disaster, plain and simple, and it should be fixed fast. There's more people than just Brown that have to go.
