Whining is un-American

It is bad enough that the Angry Left is blaming George Bush for the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. But it is really unseemly for the Governor of Louisiana and the Mayor of New Orleans to be blaming the Federal government. After all, the state and local governments in America are supposed to have the authority and the responsibility to be the first responders to natural disasters in their jurisdictions.

Whining is un-American

Unless you were one of the countless natural born democrats I saw on TV, heard on the radio, etc. who were complaining that the government hadn't done enough for them, hadn't done it fast enough, or made them wait in line.

Ray Nagin's homies from the superdome chanting about "we need help" like cheerleaders in a high school football game on national news certainly puts a nail in the coffin of the idea that "whining is un-American."

IMHO, it actually makes them look bad in the eyes of the rest of America. The fact that the libs are doing their hand-wringing and not doing a damn thing otherwise is helping to alienate themselves further from John/Jane Q. Public.

I had not thought of the "French Connection" however, the shoe fits!

Interesting how rules and regulations stop people from saving the lives of others - volunteer boats could not be used to save lives because life jackets were not on board! That has to be the most ridiculous item of the day.

Really? I certainly don't see it in the vast majority of Americans. It's turned into the whiny all about me mentality.

While whining is *intrinsic* to being a Democrat.

Maybe in the urban centers on the East and Left Coast. In Fly-Over country, I see the self-reliant America.

Welcome to the Feminization of the American Male'

Imagine what a "Patton" would have done in a situation like this.

Of course the media would paint him as a Fascist.

Although I agree with her overall point, doesn't it kinda seem like she's whining about the left and the local authorities.

Does to me.

Well it does to you and me, but I suspect that there are more that think the rest of us own them something than think that we should all be as self sufficient as possible.

The chain of responsibility!

citizens in New Orleans is:

1. The Mayor 2. The New Orleans director of Homeland Security (a political appointee of the Governor who reports to the Governor) 3. The Governor 4. The Head of Homeland Security 5. The President

What did each do?

1. The mayor, with 5 days advance, waited until 2 days before he announced a mandatory evacuation (at the behest of the President). The he failed to provide transportation for those without transport even though he had hundreds of buses at his disposal.

2. The New Orleans director of Homeland Security failed to have any plan for a contingency that has been talked about for 50 years. Then he blames the Feds for not doing what he should have done. (So much for political appointees)

3. The Governor, despite a declaration of disaster by the President 2 DAYS BEFORE the storm hit, failed to take advantage of the offer of Federal troops and aid. Until 2 DAYS AFTER the storm hit.

4. The Director of Homeland Security positioned assets in the area to be ready when the Governor called for them

5. The President urged a mandatory evacuation, and even declared a disaster State of Emergency, freeing up millions of dollars of federal assistance, should the Governor decide to use it.
the levees that broke were the responsibility of the local landowners

From Tocqueville, about Europeans

This detachment from his own fate becomes so extreme that, if his own safety or that of his children is threatened, instead of trying to ward off the danger, he folds his arms and waits for the entire nation to come to his rescue.

Had Tocqueville time-travelled to meet the current Senator and Governor of Louisiana?

An accurate assessment then and accurate today.

Scary on how accurate an assessment of Jackass Party Tocqueville gives, 150 years ago or so. The mroe things change, the more they stay the same. I wonder how many in N.O. and Louisiana can claim direct French descent?

"Welcome to the Feminization of the American Male'

What, again with the "wimmin is irrational" riff? There are plenty of rational, strong, capable women who don't sit on their fat heinies wailing "Save me, Tommy! Save me!" and there always have been. It's just that up til 30 years ago or so, women were taught to allow men to grab all the credit, because otherwise the poor man's frail ego would be crushed and he would not marry us -- a fate worse than death.

In the words of my sainted Southern Granny, "For heaven's sake, HUSH UP AND DO YOUR WORK."

The New Orleans director of Homeland Security failed to have any plan for a contingency that has been talked about for 50 years.

Very early this a.m. I heard on the radio about a 200 page report that had been prepared on evacuating New Orleans in the event of a levee break. It was unclear if it had been written by this NO person or by an outside consulting firm. It was also unclear if it had been delivered to the Federal Government before the storm or at all. I wonder if it is a back-dated report for which the feds paid a huge pile of money. Maybe the vagueness of the news bit is the beginning of someone's CYA.

The intrepid Mary is still whining and blaming everyone but herself - she has been on the levee board in LA for 25 years and now she wants more money; give it to anyone but Mary Landrieu, her track record is pathetic!

Sen. Mary Landrieu refused on Friday to withdraw or apologize for her threat to punch President Bush if he criticized Louisiana officials - despite Bush's magnanimous speech Thursday night and a federal downpayment of more than $60 billion dollars to rebuild her state.

We owe a great debt to Ted Koppel's Nightline immediately following Dubya's speech!

Some in the media continue to replay that wonderful interview of the refugees at the Astrodome.

Some people get it!!!!

The 200 page report of what civic authorities and employees should do is conspicuously missing. I wonder if the NYT is suing for a FOIA to see it!

The plan for citizens as it appears on that website:

General Evacuation Guidelines
General evacuation for disasters apply to both natural (hurricane, flood, thunderstorm, tornado) and man-made (chemical and fire). If you are told to EVACUATE you should move to a place designated by public officials.
Follow these steps:

* Stay calm.
* Take your disaster supply kit.
* Remember as you leave your house to do the following:
- Turn off lights, household gas appliances, heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems.
- Leave refrigerator/freezer on.
- Lock house.
* Only use the phone in case of an emergency, injury, or illness. If you must use the phone, keep calls brief.
* Do not listen to rumors. Turn on your radio or television for up-to-date information from public officials during an emergency.
* Use only one vehicle for your family. If you have room, assist any neighbors that may need a ride.
* Tune to Emergency Alerting System 870 AM or 101.9 FM radio stations for reports about evacuation routes, conditions, etc. Use those travel routes specified.
* Drive safely. Traffic will be heavy. Law enforcement officials along the route will help with traffic.
* If you need a ride, try to go with a neighbor, friend, or relative.
* Let others know when you leave and where you are going.
* Make arrangements for pets. Animals are not allowed in public shelters. Pet carriers are recommended along with pet supplies.

Estimated evacuation drive times* from New Orleans to:
Alexandria 16 hours
Baton Rouge 8 hours
Lafayette 8 hours
Lake Charles 16 hours
Shreveport 20 hours
Hattiesburg 8 hours
Jackson 24 hours
Meridian 16 hours
*Travel time during an evacuation is four times longer than in normal conditions.
