Ripe crops languish in the fields. It's harvest time, but where are the farmworkers?

Gasp! Surely you don't mean they should have to WORK for their welfare checks?!?! How could you...

the proposed bill, tied to this "article" is SO STUPID!

Even if it were passed the percieved shortage of farm workers would continue.
The moment any "immigrant" gets close to citizenship they will cease doing farm work!

So then we have to import more "farm workers", while those already here import their family members, distant relatives, etc., until the real goal of "Reconquista" is accomplished.

Get the "Farm workers" out of those central valley construction jobs, better yet, just send them home and let the farmers find Americans to do the job, or pay to develope the necessary machinery to do it without stoop labor.

Charging a higher price for anything will cause its market to shrink, except if there is absolutely no subsitute and no conservation. Farmers are subject to the laws of supply and demand just like everyone else.

By allowing cheap labor, we are delaying efficiency. But sooner or later it will catch up with us.

The article is about the shortage of crop pickers. I've absolutely no quarrel if evacuees from N.O. would join these ranks, and your suggestion is noteworthy.

However (firm Constitutionalist that I am), there is no legitimate way to coerce an evacuee into picking crops.

Nor is there any need: the Calbanian penal system is chock full, chock-a-block, with non-violent criminals who CAN, quite legally, be sent off to pick the various crops.

It used to be that high school kids would take time off to earn some money in these jobs. Now schools start back in the middle of August.

And who is asking about the wisdom of farm owners who plant crops KNOWING they cannot harvest them without the help of thousands of illegals?

Don't THEY share some blame for this?

About fifteen years ago real progress was being made in doing that.
Then the funding was pulled at the behest of union thugs and the LaRaza lobby!

The Mex. lobby is terrified that if AG. is fully mechanized they will lose their only leverage for LE's continued ignoring of the invasion.
The union thugs have decided they like "immigrant" workers better than citizens, the "immigrants" vote just as the union tells them to.

They all left for the gulf. Sub-contractors are hiring and there are billions of dollars of contracts to be had.

I say this in jest, but its probably true.

Perhaps they heard a rumor? I don't have a clue, but it might be something to look into?

Cut off welfare and all the benefits that go along with it and there will be more than ample farm workers.

I live in a farming community. Our crops are not withering in the fields. There is plenty of labor.

I know what you mean about the machines. When I was an 8th grader, we would buck hay bales for 35 cents an hour. All day on tractor pulled sleds with baling hooks. Then we got to stack the stack.

Now they have great big bales it would have taken 10 of us to lift. Machines do it all now.

Why can't strawberries be picked by machines here in the USA. A little bit of upfront capital investment and you got strawberries.

ROFL,.. yeah right.

I'm sure that they'd be just itching to come to California to pick fruit and vegetables if ONLY they could GET there.

I wonder if there are any buses available to get them there? I wonder what happened to those buses? Oh wait, they're all sitting, waterlogged in a parking lot in New Orleans.

Perhaps the mayor, Mr. Nagin forgot about them. That tends to happen to you when you're stoned and drunk on drugs or booze.

Or else just plain stupid or lazy.

Is there a hidden meaning here or was it an accidental poor choice of words... :<)

Many of the farmworkers who year after year make the trip from their homelands to California, doing the work Americans shun, have found their own ladders of success to climb. They're taking better-paying jobs in construction and landscaping

How about telling us how many have chucked the farm fields for the welfare free check?
