Afghans vote in historic elections amid attacks

Updated: 1:48 p.m. ET Sept. 18, 2005 KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghans chose a legislature for the first time in decades Sunday, embracing their newly recovered democratic rights and braving threats of Taliban attacks to cast votes in schools, tents and mosques.

Violence in the hours before voting began and during the day killed 15 people, including a French commando in the U.S.-led coalition that is helping Afghans build a democracy after a quarter-century of conflict. But there were no signs of a spectacular attack threatened by Taliban militants to disrupt the vote.

Sunday’s vote was considered the last formal step toward democracy on a path set out after a U.S.-led force drove the Taliban from power in 2001, when they refused to hand over al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Afghans and Iraqis vote under threat of death. More bad news for defeatists in the lunatic left of western society.

Bravo brave citizens!

I LOVE this part:

"More than 12 million registered
Some 12.4 million Afghans were registered to vote for the 249-seat lower house of parliament, or Wolesi Jirga, and 420 seats on 34 provincial assemblies. Nearly 5,800 candidates — including 582 women — were on the ballots.

A quarter of the seats being voted on were reserved for women, who make up more than 42 percent of registered voters."

Compare that to our voter turnout, where we don't have to dodge bombs or bullets when we go to the polls!

See what happens when Western leftist-media are concentrating on Bushblame for hurricane devastation.

The minute they leave a scene, forget to write the script in favor of the bad guys, the good guys win.

Heres hoping they point their wrath towards FEMA/BUSH for the next year, instead of bucking up the Islamic cults in Iraq.

It's a shame that great news like this is on the back-burner, what with Iraq and our own troubles with Katrina. The Afghanis' experiment with democracy is no less momentous than the Iraqis'.

Great news!

However, I'll add that it is a shame that Tyrannical US drug laws are unleashing violence and horror upon the people of Afghanistan. The best thing we could do to stablize Afghaninstan is legalize drugs.

Puleeze! With all the news about second hand cigarette smoke (even taking custody from smoking parents) how about this; kids getting a second hand high from marajuana and opium. Legalizing drugs would turn this country into those that have legalized drugs; higher crime rates, lower worker productivity, etc. If ya'll want to smoke a doobie, go fer it, but don't force it on the rest of the country who doesn't want it or the kids who don't need it!

IIRC, most Afghani heroin enters Europe via (drum roll please) Kosovo and Albania while the US gets most of its heroin from Asia and across its southern border from Mexico and South America.

Great news. In the last four years Afghanistan has been transformed from a brutal seven century islamic society to a nation embracing freedom and democracy. Thank you President Bush and all our brave troops who have made this possible.

"If ya'll want to smoke a doobie, go fer it,"

I thought Liberals were normally the ones that argue by questioning intentions...

The drug issue is a national security issue.

Kids can get pot and other drugs easier than they can get alchol. The reason? One is legal, one is not.

ok, well then European drug laws need to be changed then.

For the most part, they already are considerably more liberal than the US.

Excellent. Another large step has been taken in democratizing the Middle East and this is great news for the War Against The Jihadists in general.

I can't wait to see this fantastic news for America trumpeted by the Big Network Media 24/7 for the next few weeks.

This good news reminds of lines in a 1914 gospel song by Charles H. Gabriel:
"His love is lifting nations and tribes over all the earth,
"And all the world should now be extolling His boundless worth..."

Here is the complete song. For the music, click on the link and start singing the words when the clarinet part breaks in.

Extol Him! (1914)

http://www.angelfire.com/ks/landzastanza/hr110.mid

words and music by Charles H. Gabriel

Come ye whose souls delight in the marvelous King of love,
And send today an anthem of joy to the throne above;
His grace has made us happy and free from the bonds of sin,
And if we still rely on His grace we shall surely win.
Praise Him, ye servants of His, anthems outpour in His praise;
Gathered today in His glorious Presence hosannas gladly raise;
Honor His wonderful name, sing of His love o'er and o'er;
With the glad angels of heaven extol Him forever and ever more.

His love is lifting nations and tribes over all the earth,
And all the world should now be extolling His boundless worth;
Our King is He, the Ruler who came from His throne above
And bled and died to show to the sinner His wondrous love.
Praise Him, ye servants of His, anthems outpour in His praise;
Gathered today in His glorious Presence hosannas gladly raise;
Honor His wonderful name, sing of His love o'er and o'er;
With the glad angels of heaven extol Him forever and ever more.

Oh, sing today, with voices of gladness, a sweet new song,
And praise His name till mountains and valleys His praise prolong;
Repeat with joy love's marvelous story till life be past,
That we may see our glorious King on His throne at last.
Praise Him, ye servants of His, anthems outpour in His praise;
Gathered today in His glorious Presence hosannas gladly raise;
Honor His wonderful name, sing of His love o'er and o'er;
With the glad angels of heaven extol Him forever and ever more.
