New laws 'will alienate mainstream Muslims'

IN the immediate aftermath of the 7/7 bombings, Britain’s moderate Muslim leaders stood “shoulder to shoulder” with Tony Blair to condemn the attacks.

Just two months later, that consensus has broken down. Yesterday, those same leaders accused the Government of alienating moderates and helping extremists to thrive through the anti-terror plans.

Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, the leader of the Muslim Parliament, said that he and other mainstream leaders — widely characterised as the acceptable face of British Islam — have been frustrated. “We want to eliminate extremists within our community. But the Government seems to believe that we can only do so with legislation.

“The Prime Minister has underestimated the gulf between most Muslims, their leaders and the British Establishment. There needs to be consensus and discussion, and much gentle persuasion of mistrustful youth, not rules from on high,” he said.

Others have been concerned at the lack of consultation with moderate groups representing a majority of Britain’s 1.3 million Muslims. Massoud Shadjareh, chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, said that his group is being consulted over proposed “stop and search” policies but not over the anti-terror laws.

“There have been no talks, no advice, none that I know of with any Muslim. When it comes to what really matters, we are sidelined,” he said.

“We cannot be seen to support this legislation because it so obviously breaches human rights, and it will be British Muslims who will be targeted.

“The Government has not explained why the extension of detention to three months will make it more likely that we will detect terrorists,” he said.

One leading Muslim leader said that the legislation has driven a wedge between the Government and moderate Muslim groups who are struggling to gain the support of young British Muslims.

Ajamal Masroor, an executive member of the Islamic Society of Britain, said that his organisation would lose credibility if it supported the laws. “We have been trying over the last few weeks to win a war of ideas with a small number of our young people, and this legislation blows all of that hard work away.”

Mohammed Shahid Raza, an executive member of the Muslim College, which trains religious scholars, said that the targeting of radical Muslim clerics will alienate many young Muslims who have adopted their own imams.

No such thing as a moderate Muslim. To heck with them. Their "religion" is really a death cult.

There are moderate Muslims - and there are death cult Muslims. Our only chance of winning this war is to know the difference, understand the difference, and use the difference. Moderate Muslims must win, have dignity and a place at the table. Death cult Muslims must walk around without wives, power, family or prestige.

Some of this is a generational problem. Much like we had in the 60's where the disproportionate numbers of young overwhelmed the more rational adult society. Young Muslims and their sophmoric thinking are trumping adult tradition. Much like the boomers did here. We couldn't figure it out in the '60's. Our culture outgrew it by having the boomers grow up. Muslim cultures can't figure it out either. Add to that the fact that most Muslim cultures are corrupt, close minded, and use religion as the best horse to ride for power, and you see the magnitude of the problem.

I'm not paranoid... they ARE out to kill me.
Your attempt to make an arguement as to why we should be more tolerant doesn't work.
We couldn't figure out what to do with hippies... our only savior was they grew up, sort of. Where do you think today's liberals came from? And they still inflict damage on "the establishment". They still fuel distrust.
muslims are told to lie to infidels. It's in the muslim code. There is no way for an outsider to figure out who is who in the muslim world. And the death cult is a significant portion of the muslim world.
By rejecting all muslims it puts added pressure on the "moderates" to either control their extremist bretheren, or be like them. Either one works for me.
muslims can, and should control their extremist element. If they don't, or are afraid, ok. But that makes them all my enemy.
This is not a position I take lightly. I don't enjoy writing people off. I am a Christian, and it's not what Christians are taught. But, there comes a point where self defense is a priority. That time is here.
