Does the red cross symbol used by the Red Cross organization have any religious origins? The Christian cross has the cross bar about 3/4 way up, not in the center. The Red Cross symbol is more of a plus sign than a cross (i.e. "+" vs "†").

It's actually a reverse of the Swiss flag.

I believe it was taken from the Red Crosses worn on the tabards of the Crusaders who served as medics. There was an order of the Knights Hospitallier that took the wounded from the battlefields and nursed them.

There are multiple variations of the "Christian" cross - many of which are not the 3/4 version we normally think of in American Protestantism - but they are legit Christian crosses, probably more historically authentic than what we normally think of as "the" cross.
