INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Sportscaster Chris Schenkel, whose easygoing baritone won over fans during a more than six-decade broadcasting career in which he covered everything from bowling to the Olympics, died Sunday following a long battle with emphysema. He was 82.

Schenkel's wife, Fran, said she and the couple's two sons were at her husband's side when he passed away early Sunday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he had been hospitalized for two weeks after undergoing surgery for a bleeding ulcer.

"He was a very, very sincere, loving man who loved what he did,'' said Fran Schenkel, noting that they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January.

Schenkel's radio and television career included virtually every major sports competition and several pioneering broadcasts.

Probably the first sportscaster voice I remember hearing. I grew up listening to him. Thanks Chris! RIP. Prayers up.

Why does this bring to mind the idea that we are entering that stage in life where we begin to reminisce about the "good old days"? I remember Mr. Schenkel being the first voice I ever heard announcing a sports event (read "Any" sports event). And he did it with class, with impartiality, and without implied political spin. Rest in peace, Mr. Schenkel. We will miss you. And God bless your family and loved ones.

When I was growing up, he and Keith Jackson were the top voices of college football. RIP, Chris. You were awesome.

Jim Healy used to always call him "the late Chris Schenkel"...ironic that Healy died well before Schenkel. RIP, both.

Chris Schenkel was an "old fashioned" sports announcer who allowed the sporting event, rather than the announcer, to take center stage.

Contrast his style with, say, John Madden, who will not peremit viewers, even for a nanosecond, to forget that John Madden is the announcer.

Ditto. I remember Chris Schenkel broadcasting NBA basketball for ABC in the early '60's....first time I ever saw Russell and Havlicek and the Jones gang on the tube....became a Celtics fan and went out and learned to jumpshoot bank shots in 8th grade. Tried to do a Bailey Howell running hookshot but never figured it out....:}

I learned how to shoot (and finally hit) free throws by copying Bill Russell. Those Celtics were awesome.

Interesting. I grew up in Fort Wayne and never realized how big Chris was.

God rest his soul.

And now, I can't get the song "Basketball Jones" out of my head.
