Sounds like we are all skating around affirmative action. Pick a woman, pick a minority race, etc. It is possible to choose the best qualified person who has a combination of other political assets. I hope we get a woman justice because an all male court would not have the benefit of the different perspective a woman would bring in making decisions which affect male and female citizens alike. Fortunately, Pres Bush has a number of good conservative women to choose from.

Stupid idea. Asians will not vote GOP because an Asian is nominated. Hispanics will not vote GOP because a Hispanic is nominated.

Focus on what is NEEDED ON THE SUPREME COURT, not what might make a tiny handful of swing voters feel good.

I have seen just enough of Mr. Dinh to doubt that he is a
leader in the mold of Scalia, Thomas, or Rehnquist.
I think he's a little weak. And much as I might admire his
life story, that is IRRELEVANT TO HIS QUALIFICATIONS.

GET OFF THESE IRRELEVANCIES, PEOPLE.

He's also too young. Too much time to "grow," and why assume he'd want to spend the rest of his life on the
Court?

Use common sense, folks. We need someone with a solid
right-wing record, ON THE FEDERAL BENCH.

Luttig, Garza or Jones. Period.

Will anybody make the case for the best person regardless of race?

Been there and done that. His name is Roberts.

What does bother me is that we seem to be playing into the diversity game here.

Already picked a white man in Roberts. No one is playing the diversity game. This guy may be as good or better than roberts.

I think it's reasonable for people to desire to replace her with another.

It seems you are playing the anti diversity or anti change game. That is since there are no hispanics or asians on scotus, none should be allowed since you prefer that people be replaced one for one based on race and gender.

Your position is absurd by the way.

Sandra Day O'Connor was picked because Reagan thought she would be a true rightie because she was the Chairperson of the AZ GOP and because she was the first women to SCOTUS the dems who controlled congress had to approve her.

I personally think those on the SCOTUS get more liberal as they get older so maybe a young conservative might be good ?

Robert Bork; he's 78 and Bush can both thumb his nose, wipe off the snot and nominate a trophy trollop before he retires to Crawford and settles in to peruse his collection of encomia.

When qualifications/temperament are all within acceptable boundaries you must consider what else the candidate/nominee can bring to the table. I simply like the thought of a refugee from a communist state rising to such a level of power in the USA. Nowhere else in the world, I should think, could that happen. It says a great deal about our nation that he would even be considered but actually seeing him appointed would be pretty d%&n powerful.

"....., he contributed to a number of key Administration policy initiatives most notably in the drafting and implementing of the USA PATRIOT Act."

- I'm afraid that bio entry would be all the left needs to scuttle his candidacy. The Patriot Act is one of the left's favorite whipping boys - an Act designed to give Bush near dictatorial, dare I say, Hitler like authority. The ACLU would lead the charge. There would be law professor inspired riots at campuses all across America and RINO's like Spector would creep into the underbrush.

We'll hear more about him in the coming years, surely, even if he's not on the short list this time. He sounds absolutely wonderful.

Every times there's an opening the left raises some of the same arguements you have here. I've already stated what my opinion of Viet Dinh is. As for you opinion, we've all got one on the subject. Later...

My only concern about appointing someone young, is that if they go south it would be a number of decades before we could replace them.

Hillary would not like your idea.

Viet Dinh

During the Senate confirmation process Dinh's only "nay" vote came from Hillary Clinton -- presumably over his participation in the Senate Whitewater investigation, and to a lesser extent the impeachment trial of her husband.

This is in no way meant to reflect negatively on Viet Dinh, who may be an excellent candidate. What does bother me is that we seem to be playing into the diversity game here. I don't see that this is called for and it ticks me off. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was white. Chief Justice Renquist was also white. And we're picking a minority because????

Because he clerked for Sandra Day O'Connor?
