I tried making this point about mutual aid societies to a liberal and the government basically putting them out of business.

They told me I was lying.

So, once again Pres. Bush was right. It's called "Faith Based Charity," and the libs HATE it.

The hundreds of millions of dollars collected by private organizations for Katrina relief is a mere decimal point compared to the government appropriation.

Kids that grow up in welfare families, which is a lot of them these days, grow up with the idea that their government owes them a living. 'Course that is pretty close to the general leftist philosophy anyway.

"They were better at making judgments about who needs a handout and who needed a kick in the rear. They helped the helpless, but administered tough love to the rest. They taught self-sufficiency."

I know my neighbors, they're people with names and faces, but to agencies they are faceless numbers on a file with federal and state grant money attached.

I am a product of what you speak.

In the 1930s a charity known as Crippled Childrens Society saved me from a lifetime of disability. They paid for five years of medical care for which I have always been deeply thankful.

That society was disbanded long ago because the government decided that such was their turf.
