EVACUEES

-- Governor Rick Perry's office says approximately 97,000 refugees are in Texas shelters operated by the Red Cross, plus civic and faith-based groups. Another 105,000 people are in hotels and other locations, for a total of about 202,000 refugees.

-- The estimated number of refugees staying in major Red Cross shelters in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio is at least 30,000:

-- Perry has asked U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt for assurances that Texas will get 100% reimbursement for providing Medicaid and other services to refugees.

-- Texas public schools report have enrolled nearly 11,000 school-age refugees.

-- College students displaced by Hurricane Katrina are eligible for in-state tuition rates at Texas colleges and universities.

-- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has authorized cities and counties to pay for temporary housing assistance for refugees from 12 to 18 months.

-- The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has provided more than 60,000 Louisiana families with emergency food stamps over the past week.

-- The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is providing a number for displaced probation or parole offenders to check in, telling their location and to secure supervision.

A Mississippi National Guardsman clears bags of chickens from the beach Tuesday in Gulfport, Miss. The bags came from shipping containers that broke apart during Hurricane Katrina; the containers and their contents litter the Gulfport area in the storm's wake.
