Do you still have any hurricane people left...or have they all gone to relatives homes or what?
If you do have some...do you have all that you need?
When we left yesterday, there were 50 still there. Today, "my" little family of 5 were to leave for Houston. A church group had found a job for the dad (house painter) and a house to live in. Ms. King, the wheelchair press on nails lady, will be leaving soon. FEMA told her to stay put til her check arrives. She will be going to relatives in Atlanta.
The shelter is requesting no more food or clothes. They are running out of room! So cool...
Most of the requests are for personal items the evacuees need. One lady needed a special type soap, some needed reading glasses. Ms. King got a new wheelchair. Our church is doing the lunch shift tomorrow and I'll find out more. Rumor is that we might get 50 more this week. Thanks for asking. :-)
After reading some comments on other threads here about how lawless, shifty, lazy, ungreatful, etc. that those posters percieve these folks to be, I figured we must have gotten the cream of the crop! All I've seen is people who need help. All they own is in a trashbag or two. They are embarrassed to have to ask for anything. One dad got teary eyed because his little boy wanted a Happy Meal.....dad couldn't go get it. We did and had the dad give it to the boy. The smile on that kids face lit up the place and the dad couldn't thank us or hug us enough. For a Happy Meal!
