Compassionate Liberalism Part I: Falsely Blaming Bush and Global Warming
Men's News Daily ^ | September 6, 2005 | by Michael P. Tremoglie

As is usually the case with liberals rather than be concerned about helping their fellow human beings who have suffered a tragedy they instead try to spread lies, rumors, and half-truths in a disinformation campaign to exploit the tragedy for their own political gain.

This latest exercise in putting political power before people was manifested during the Hurricane Katrina natural disasters. Liberals –such as Robert Kennedy Jr. and the Democrats.com website – incredibly insulted the collective intelligence of the American people by making two unbelievably absurd claims.

One claim was that global warming was responsible for Hurricane and therefore so was President Bush since he opposed the Kyoto Treaty (incidentally, this was the same rationale used by another liberal loon. Michael Moore, to decry the events of September 11 and the fact that the terrorists killed people who lived in areas that did not vote for George Bush).

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from writing on the Huffingtonpost website: "Now we are all learning what it's like to reap the whirlwind of fossil fuel dependence which Barbour and his cronies have encouraged. Our destructive addiction has given us a catastrophic war in the Middle East and - now -- Katrina is giving our nation a glimpse of the climate chaos we are bequeathing our children

Journalist Ross Gelbspan wrote for the Boston Globe that the hurricane was "nicknamed Katrina by the National Weather Service Katrina, [but] its real name was global warming."

Sir David King, the British Government's chief scientific adviser, has warned that global warming may be responsible for the devastation reaped by Hurricane Katrina.

Amy Goodman the host of Democracy Now, a show broadcast by NPR, interviewed MIT professor Kerry Emmanuel during her August 29, 2005 program. Emmanuel recently did a study suggesting that global warming may be increasing the intensity and duration of hurricanes. This study has been criticized by his peers. However, even Professor Emmanuel denied that Hurricane Katrina was caused by or related to global warming – even though Goodman seemed to have wanted him to do so.

Goodman introduced Emmanuel, “Tropical storms may be growing in overall intensity due to human induced global warming, this according to a new study by leading hurricane researcher, Kerry Emmanuel.”

Yet, during the interview Emmanuel said, “We have had this very active last ten years, along the U.S. and gulf coasts to blame that on global warming, but looking at it statistically, that's a very difficult connection to make. I think what you are seeing mostly is a natural cycle in this case.”

Goodman tried to get Emmanuel to unequivocally state that there was a correlation between global warming and hurricanes worldwide. The professor responded. “I think it's fair to say that we don't fully understand it. The intensity seems to have gone up a little bit more than we would have expected it to, based on theory and models of global warming…. we're in the process now of trying to reconcile the theory with the observations ….Before the 1990s, a lot of hurricane specialists had forecasts that we were going to go back to an active period in the Atlantic, and again, this has nothing to do with global warming.”

Despite the best efforts of liberals to politicize a tragedy – even their sources refute them.

Meanwhile other scientists – those the liberals do not want the public to hear – do not concur with the “global warming increasing hurricane intensity” theory. They do however join the consensus of scientists who do state unequivocally that global warming and Hurricane Katrina are completely unrelated.

According to an August 30 Los Angeles Times report, William Gray, a Colorado State University meteorologist who is considered one of the fathers of modern tropical cyclone science, said: " The people who have a bias in favor of the argument that humans are making the globe warmer will push any data that suggests that humans are making hurricanes worse, but it just isn't so,"…"A lot of my colleagues who have been around a long time are very skeptical of this idea that global warming is leading to more frequent or intense storms” ( italics mine)

According to several articles the United Nations Environment Programme of the World Meteorological Organization stated, "Reliable data…since the 1940s indicate that the peak strength of the strongest hurricanes has not changed, and the mean maximum intensity of all hurricanes has decreased."

While the environmental zealots were propagandizing their crusade and trying to blame President Bush’s Kyoto Treaty policy, their liberal Democratic Party brethren were doing the same about Hurricane Katrina and Bush’s tax cut policies ( if you can believe this one). This will be addressed in Part 2.

When all the Global Warming Liberals drive hybrid cars, and Bobby Kennedy Jr. becomes a true advocate of the Cape Wind Project, they/he may have a little more credibility. Not with their silly Global Warming junk science, but at least in leading by example on enviro matters.
