'Cowboy' Bush failed in Katrina evacuation - Chavez
Washington Post ^ | 8/31/05 | Reuters

Posted on 09/05/2005 12:21:32 PM PDT by Tom87

"That man, the king of vacations ... the king of vacations in his ranch said nothing but, you have to flee, and didn't say how ... that cowboy, the cowboy mentality," said [Venezuelan president Hugo] Chavez, chuckling in a reference to Bush without naming him directly.

Why is the Washington Post publishing this? Have they become the propaganda arm for Hugo Chavez?

See, I think of "vacation" as not only physically leaving my workplace for a while, but leaving work, and all its trappings, behind. Our presidents can't really do that. Dubya certainly can't right now. They can dress down, go out and ride the range or whatever between briefings, but they can't leave the job completely behind them in DC. Presidential "vacations" are not so much vacations as glorified off-site assignments.

Does Bush take an inappropriate amount of vacation time?

For crying out loud, a President is never really on vacation. The weight of the world follows him wherever he goes.

I wonder how many other people on vacation still have to be on call at a moments notice, still have to receive foreign leaders, still have to be briefed daily, etc. I don't exactly call what President Bush does a vacation. He was just away from D.C. It doesn't mean he got to get away from the stresses of being the leader of the free world.

does Bush take an inappropriate amount of vacation time? I have felt sometimes that he should be spending more time in Washington, if only for perception's sake.

Did you ever notice that the Senate and House are not in session? Most of them have fled back home too. I doubt that any of the Senate or House committees are doing work by phone conferences.

It's interesting that the left argues that we all should have the 4 weeks paid vacation of the Europeans, except for Republican presidents, who deserve no vacation.

The only reason we know where Bush is and not where all the Senators are is that politically important things do happen while Bush is at Crawford, so the press has to be there and sweat it out (and complain).

Argentina has cowboys (gauchos) but the Argentinians didn't do so well when they tried to take the Falklands/Malvinas from Margaret Thatcher.

Chavez may have a point, though...our "cowboy" Presidents haven't done very well preventing natural disasters: Teddy Roosevelt failed to prevent the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Reagan failed to prevent Hurricane Gilbert in 1985, and GWB utterly failed to deflect Katrina from hitting the U.S.

If Kerry had won, Katrina would have hit the U.S., after it didn't...

" I see that the DNC faxes have arrived in Caracas. "

Maybe, or more likely Castro Jr's fax arrived at DNC headquarters with talking points.

Yes, thank you.

For anyone who buys the lib MSM line that "Bush takes too much vacation" ask yourself where the legislative branch is all summer. The Supreme Court is also out of session. I believe they get back to work "the first Monday in October".

I prefer a pesident who does not spend too much time in Washington.

Not to mention it make it a whole lot easier for a whole lot of the REST of the Federal government (most notably the Secret Service and White House staff) to take their own vacations in August -- while the President is out of town.

Without a phone? Maybe you live in an igloo. W called to evacuate while the mayor and gov had their head up their butts. But you won't read or hear that in YOUR liberal press.

The liberals always need to be told what to do and still they don't do it. Just like rebellious children - they always know better.
