NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 4 - A day after two police suicides and the abrupt resignations or desertions of up to 200 police officers, defiant city officials on Sunday began offering five-day vacations - and even trips to Las Vegas - to the police, firefighters and city emergency workers and their families.
The idea of paid vacations was raised by both Mayor C. Ray Nagin and senior police officials who said that their forces were exhausted and traumatized and that the arrival of the National Guard had made way for the officers to be relieved.
"I'm very concerned about individuals who have been here, particularly since the first few days, and have been through a lot of hardship," Mr. Nagin said in an interview.

It MIGHT explain why the looters had "AK-47"s and other automatic weapons.
HUH? You haven't heard? Those were water bottles exploding under truck tires!.
Yea, Figure that one out.
It was said to Giraldo by a NG commander in N.O. on the job.
True. I will bet dollars to donuts the guns originated in gun shops and were taken right off the walls and shelves by the looters themselves.
Maybe Celine Dion will do a couple concerts for those poor fellows that lost their wives....
No wonder they are heading to Vegas.
Sounds like part of a Lettermen top 10 list.
"I'm going to Disneyland!"
"Colonel Ebbert, the senior official running the recovery and rescue operation, and Mr. Compass [the police superintendent] both said that they planned to take a break as well, but probably for less than five days, and that they would continue to direct the recovery by telephone."
LOL, I guess they better change the name from the Big Easy to the Big Lazy.
These people are a disgrace.

These guys probably deserve some time off.
The directNIC employees (who stayed in NO during last week and blogged and cammed the entire week's events) said there were rumors of cops running off looters, then backing SUVs (which they had "commandeered") up to the locale and loading up the loot for themselves.
I would not believe it, except we did see other examples of the police helping themselves to merchandise. I'm sure the police know who among their own is to be shunned, or left off the vacation list.
sheesh, what a mess.
NOPD = NO PD
That's one way to reduce crime in the city.
That's a good one!
On a serious note, how can Nagin live with himself? You'd think Blanco and Nagin would have done the honorable thing and commited suicide after this fiasco.
I heard Nagin on ABC radio at newsbreak earlier and he was asked if he would have done anything different and his response was something to the effect that he would have told the higherups to get off the rears much sooner. This guy should be in jail. If i had the exact quote Id make a new thread. P------ me off.
I would rather them two commit suicide than the few police officers who did, they were actually needed.
Agreed.
hehe! :D looks like a cd cover.
The cops on "Reno 911!" are more professional than the NOPD...
