Poll: Bush Not Taking Brunt of Katrina Criticism
ABC NEWS ^ | 09/04/05 | GARY LANGER

Posted on 09/04/2005 8:54:31 AM PDT by Pikamax

Sept. 4, 2005 — Americans are broadly critical of government preparedness in the Hurricane Katrina disaster — but far fewer take George W. Bush personally to task for the problems, and public anger about the response is less widespread than some critics would suggest.

Sampling, data collection and tabulation for this poll were done by TNS.

In an event that clearly has gripped the nation — 91 percent of Americans are paying close attention — hopefulness far outweighs discontent about the slow-starting rescue. And as in so many politically charged issues in this country, partisanship holds great sway in views of the president's performance.

The most critical views cross jurisdictions: Two-thirds in this ABC News/Washington Post poll say the federal government should have been better prepared to deal with a storm this size, and three-quarters say state and local governments in the affected areas likewise were insufficiently prepared.

That said, the "classy" approach the feds are taking is not going to work against the MSM and dems throwing everything at them. They have to fight back.

I think the important part of the poll is that 75% of Americans recognize that the State and Local Govt's were unprepared. Thats a wedge the democrats will be hard pressed to down play.

I did a vanity post about an hour ago about an unscientific iwon.com poll on September 1 about "the U.S. government response to Katrina" (that's a paraphrase). This story pretty much confirms the results of the unscientific Iwon.com poll...

It must have killed ABC managers to report this..

By critics they mean Democrats and the media.

1) Katrina is an act of nature, absent malice or intent.

2) Unemployment for the last 3 months has been 5.0%, 5.0%, and 4.9%.

Of course, Americans aren't stupid.

The Black Caucus and the MSM can yell and scream, but people know that local officials are responsible to evacuate a city in the event of a storm approaching.

Does Bush have to take the responsibility for every local governments unpreparedness.

And truth be told, it's hard to believe that all those people didn't have a way out of New Orleans.

Yes, there were sick and infirmed, some too poor to get out, and they should have been provided a way, but many didn't leave because they wouldn't leave.

That factors into the average Americans understanding of a problem.

We are a compassionate people, but most Americans tend to be a little judgemental when they feel like people ignored warnings.

I agree. The first thing they can do is to talk about where the responsibility is for calling in the national guard. People think the president is in charge, but it's the governor, of course. That 3-star general in charge of the evacuation answers to Blanco, not Bush.

Anyone who has been following this from day one and is intellectually honest can clearly see where most of the fault lies. When the truth emerges Bush's approval rating will be higher. Imagine what it would be if the MSM was even handed.

Hopefully all this says, that people are fed up with government and petty politics that kill people. Lets hope, Republican and Democrat, we all do something. Look at Pork Barreling, Bridge in Alaska to no where, New Orleans, corrupt and incompetent administration, Governor of Louisiana more interested in not letting President Bush get the credit for leadership than saving her people.

We just can't rely on Government. I hope there will be a thread in Free Republic for preparedness, what we can do to save our selves.
