Mississippians Worry They're Forgotten
POSTED: 7:42 pm EDT September 3, 2005
JACKSON, Miss. -- In Mississippi, there is misery and despair among victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Survivors are wondering how long it will take to get food, clean water and shelter. And they're more than angry at the federal government and the national news media.
Anger at the government stems from the belief that aid has been too slow in arriving.
There's also a feeling that Mississippi has been getting short shrift from the news media, which seem to be focusing most of their attention on New Orleans.
Mississippi's death toll from Katrina stands at 144. Along the battered Mississippi Gulf Coast, crews have begun searching boats for corpses.
President George W. Bush toured ravaged areas of the Mississippi coast on Friday with Gov. Haley Barbour and other state officials. They also flew over flooded New Orleans.

Trent was with the President when he went to Biloxi on Friday. I believe Trent's house on Beach Rd. in Pascagoula was destroyed in the storm. I know that I read that Gene Taylor, the Dem Representative from the Coast also lost his house in Bay St. Louis. They certainly aren't feeling the same pain as the others who lost their homes, but I'm sure it's not trivial for them.
I have been annoyed at the coverage of the destruction in MS. We were worried about our family members, and all we saw was the looting in New Orleans or the guitar out in front of the Hard Rock cafe! Thankfully all our family members are safe and sound, though two of them in MS lost their homes, and the two who live in New Orleans have lost theirs as well.
"The squeaky wheel gets all the oil"
I heard Trent and Gene have weekend cottages
in the NE US.
You usually have to pay for a seat to see that kind of over acting.
Just saw your post. My version was oil instead of grease but it's a sad truth either way.
I would love to get on over there and spend some time getting to know the place. Sure some parts will need the tourist dollars.
BTW, I'm not saying Trent is a bad guy or that he doesn't care about MS. Far from it. He's just not my favorite pol.
I have been "upset" with him since impeachment.
I understand your feelings.
He's not my favorite either. I don't know that I have a favorite. Maybe Dick Cheney, but that's because of Forrest McDonald's influence. Forrie has always had very good things to say about the Cheneys, and I haven't seen anything to make me question his judgement. (well, nothing that made me too upset.)
Thanks for that info, spent two years in Picayune back in the 70s. Good people in Mississippi.
No! Mississipians are not forgottee! indeed, I've been worrying continually about a College Friend of Mine, who attended Texas Woman's University, (TWU), Denton, Texas, who was almost like a Mother to me, but deffinitely a Friend.
She live(d) in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on 6 Evelyn Drive, and it was only tonight, at last, that I unhappily heard, for the first time), that Ocean Springs, MS is nearly gone...Devastated. This likely means that my great Friend from TWU, (Margaret Pearson), is out of contact, for the moment. I just hope she had the chance to Evacuate.
IF anyone, from Ocean Springs, MS knows anything about how to find out where Evacuees from that area are at, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
I tried the Red Cross, Missing Persons, but it is intended strictly for and between Family Members.
Margaret, if you do get this, by a Miracle, I'm now Clarisse L. Motter, I've been worried sick about you, and I live in Pennsylvania. Please, please, contact me.
Thursday, the evening rush hour radio guy at WOAI interviewed a man who grew up in MS. He stated, "You know there's been a news black out down there because the situation is so gruesome." Jeff Bolton just said, "yeah" and asked another question.
I've been worried ever since.
I really like Haley Barbour.
No, they are not of a "preferred victim class".
That was a beautiful post, WKB.
"Dixie" is one of my most favorite songs.
I, especially, love Elvis' "American Trilogy".
I am so proud to be from Mississippi,
and I'm proud that my roots are as
deep as the river is wide.
And, right now, as this tragedy unfolds,
I have never been so proud of you folks!
Thank you!
Thanks for the update on Mississippi. I hope anyone here from Ala. will let us know how they are doing. Its a shame we have to ask people who are there for news because the media is too busy with NO. I saw a report on Mississippi from the cute guy on Fox, I forget his name but he seems like a pretty decent sort. But haven't heard one peep about Alabama.
I still have family missing in Mississippi, I am always looking for any news regarding the Gulfport/Biloxi area. I have posted on so many boards and monitor them as well. It seems I learn more through that than from FOX, MSNBC or CNN.
The issues are different but really they have dire needs as well.
Excellent post, thanks.
