Murder and Mayhem in New Orlean's Miserable Shelter: Lessons from the Dome
Reuters ^ | September 2, 2005 | Mark Egan

Valenti and her husband, two of very few white people in the almost exclusively black refugee camp, said she and other whites were threatened with murder on Thursday.

"They hated us. Four young black men told us the buses were going to come last night and pick up the elderly so they were going to kill us," she said, sobbing. "They were plotting to murder us and then they sent the buses away because we would all be killed if the buses came -- that's what the people in charge told us this morning."

Other survivors recounted horrific cases of sexual assault and murder.

Sitting with her daughter and other relatives, Trolkyn Joseph, 37, said men had wandered the cavernous convention center in recent nights raping and murdering children.

She said she found a dead 14-year old girl at 5 a.m. on Friday morning, four hours after the young girl went missing from her parents inside the convention center.

"She was raped for four hours until she was dead," Joseph said through tears. "Another child, a seven-year old boy was found raped and murdered in the kitchen freezer last night."

I don't think that the lessons can be driven home any harder: Never give up your guns. Never rely on the government for protection. When good people give up the option of force, power defaults to the evil ones. I hope America pays attention to this microcosm of a population disarmed by the government.

Where the HELL are the Marines? Gov Blanco, just what do you think 300, THREE ZERO ZERO armed National Guard troops can do to solve this level of chaos? You have the authority Gov. Send in thousands more armed troops or ASK President Bush to send in the regular Military. YOU have the authority. USE IT. If you will not, GET OUT OF THE WAY.

I hope they clean that mess up by this afternoon. My young neighbor lady – a US Coast Guard corpsman – left this morning for New Orleans. She asked me to keep an eye on her apartment and I wished her Good Luck. I will be highly pissed if anything bad happens to her. I know the smell of rotting human bodies will be a shock to her, and the sight of death and having a hopeless patient load will be with her for a long, long time. That will be more than enough – but violence I can not fathom.

Where were all the decent men in there???

There were more than enough men to take out whatever roving gangs there were. Pathetic.

Mayor Ray Nagin and his subordinates took off for Baton Rouge almost immediately after Katrina hit. The people who voted for him took over from there.

Just where the heck have the N.O. police been during this whole ordeal?
Oh yeah, out there looting with the rest of the scum.
I have heard that the N.O. police are one of the worst forces for a large city in America and this certainly proves this.
How the heck can this idiot mayor send thousands of folks to the superdome and expect them to stay with no protection? Then bitch about everyone else.
And this governor is in so far over her head she should be running a day old bread store, not a state.

Don't know but we are STILL a nation of laws EVEN in the face of disaster. President Bush cannot just send in the troops. We have State and Local Govt for a REASON. You better believe his foes would be drawing up impeachment papers if he just drops the 82nd on NO.

Where were all the decent men in there???

They listened to the President last Saturday, and took their family out of harms way.

It's hard for me to understand such sub-human behavior in the face of a natural disaster. Remember, the folks in the New Orleans superdome have now been shipped to other cities across the US. Meanwhile, the racial arsonists are putting the blame for this disaster on whitey.

I heard many of the N.O. police have given up their badges and left. They have no homes themselves and they are fighting a battle they couldn't handle...they didn't want to risk being killed for NOTHING...they've lost their city, their homes, why be shot too?

I am sooooo outraged that we don't have military just shooting these criminals and getting some order. Shoot to kill! These snipers are the lowest of the low.

That was my exact thought. They decent people couldn't call for help or lock up the murderers and rapists, but they could have, as a collective group, stopped these crimes. It's an absolute shame.

Mayor Ray Nagin and his subordinates took off for Baton Rouge almost immediately after Katrina hit. The people who voted for him took over from there.

This excerpt didn't quote the entire article:

Many complained bitterly about why they received so little for so many days, and they had harsh words for Bush.

"I really don't know what to say about President Bush," said Richard Dunbar, 60, a Vietnam veteran. "He showed no lack of haste when he wanted to go to Iraq, but for his own people right here in Louisiana, we get only lip service."

Um. But in any case, that's it in this piece for blame. Wnether you take it as a reflection of the interviewed or a reflection of the interviewer, that's it. Not even the alleged rape-murderers get the same amount of attention.

Decadent is NOT what I'd call that...

And I don't believe New Orleans is representative of the country.

It sure better not.
