Romney blasts government response to Hurricane Katrina
The Boston Herald ^ | September 2, 2005

Posted on 09/03/2005 3:30:40 AM PDT by Panerai

BOSTON - Gov. Mitt Romney, who helped resurrect the Salt Lake Winter Olympics and is considering a run for the White House in 2008, said Hurricane Katrina caused more economic damage than the Sept. 11 terrorist attack and the government response has been ``undermanaged'' and ``an embarrassment.''

The Republican refused to pin the blame solely on the Bush administration, but he spared no level of government in his critique during a Statehouse news conference called to discuss gasoline price gouging.

``No one can be happy with the kind of response which we've seen in New Orleans, and whether that's law enforcement or whether it's a provision of resources to help those in need, it has been an undermanaged setting,'' Romney said. ``And I look at (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) and I shake my head and wonder why it's taken so long to get supplies to people that are in the Superdome. I look at the state government and wonder why they didn't call on resources and have them in place on an earlier basis.''

Twice referring to the situation as ``the crisis in the Gulf,'' he added: ``I think any of us that watched the TV in the last couple days recognize this has not been a real showcase for American ingenuity and management. And where the blame lies, I'll let, with time we'll get a better sense of where that lies. But I must admit I feel that this has been an embarrassment for the emergency management setting as has been demonstrated to the world.''

Thank God Romney is such an expert on everything. How long is this guy going to milk running the Winter Olympics ?

He can't even manage the Dem politicians in Massachusetts, but he's gonna manage a natural disaster!

``No one can be happy with the kind of response which we've seen in New Orleans, and whether that's law enforcement or whether it's a provision of resources to help those in need, it has been an under managed setting,'

I still maintain that because of all the water, no communications, the "character" of the "victims", and poor local government activity, this was a completely unmanageable situation.

Let's remember that the damn hurricane did not completely leave Louisiana and Mississippi until early Wednesday. Bush has done all he could, imo.

Well, what's past is past, and nobody could resurrect the dead. But the "lessons learned" is a valuable part for the future, and should be treated as such. For example, much earlier and stronger emphasis should be placed on maintaining law and order in all emergency situations.

Mitt has shown he is not capable of moving Mass one inch from the entrenched liberal mecca. He has done nothing to advance the conservative movement here and he should expect nothing from his national ambitions.
The state Republicans actually lost ground in the last election and it is a good bet that the Gay Marriage amendment will loose in the state legislature this month.

Eventually everyone one of these hacks is going ask GWB his blessing if they win the nomination. I wouldn't blame him if told every last one of them to go to hell!

Why has the media , for the most part, ignored the fact that the N.O. Police and Fire departments had up to 1/3 of their force abandon their posts and leave the city. Compare this to the off duty NYPC and NYFD who rushed in to help their comrades on 9-11.

I'm tired of the worlds selfish childish rants about everything being America's fault. I'm getting to the point where I think we should pull our troops from everywhere and let the world go to hell. When they come begging for help spew the crap they accused us of right back in their faces and tell them to go pound salt.

I know this is unrealistic but its early and I haven't had my cup of coffee yet.

Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way... unless somepbody sends reporters, in which case you open your mouth and show the world that you are just another dumb-ass political hack.

Scratch another "Republican" off the possibles list.

That is probably true.

Katrina - or more specifically, the propaganda masqurading as Katrina coverage - has apparently provided sufficient cover for those who previously lacked the stones to come out of the closet and suck up to the press, allowing these peacock displays of how much more compassionate they are than those "other" Republicans. In this, Mitt Romney isn't so much a surprise as a disappointment.

He's a packaged commodity, marketed to look appealing without really much there when you take a closer look. Sort of like one of those candy apples that you buy at the fair. Once you get past the candy, the rest of it is usually mighty sour.

One thing we need to do is to let the Massholes finish the Big Dig on their own and divert the money to the Big Build in the Big Easy.
And a few other things to consider:
-Repeal the recently passed Transportation Bill and send most of that money to rebuilding NOLA and MS.
-We can wait a while to go to Mars.
-We can wait a while to find out if there was once water on that rock 423 light years away.
-We can wait a while to learn more about the sex life of humpbacked frogs (or whatever).
-I'm sure there are some military projects that can wait a while.
-etc., etc., etc....

I must agree, if for no other reason than the course was set by the nature of the disaster, and previous responses to the threat. Monday morning quarterbacking is best done in private by those responsible. Sniping, whining, complaining by the crowds of the effected, or the host of people who by virtue of the passage of time now think they could have done better, do little to solve the myraid problems that are being attacked by those charged with solving them. Things will work out.

Since even Bush blasted it, why should it surprise us that everyone else does as well?
