The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina showed us what can happen when government breaks down. This was not the first disaster followed by anarchy. It was merely the largest display of anarchy we have witnessed.
Only a handful of states have retained well regulated militias comprised of law abiding citizens. Most states rely completely on the National Guard to restore law after disasters. There is always a period of time when lawlessness prevails.
The Forefathers of our nation knew there may be times when the government could not respond in a timely manner to threats within the colonies and later the states. They were wise. They gave states the rights to form militias.
Article 1, Section 8, Clause 16 states "reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress". Further, The Second Amendment states "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state".
This week we witnessed what can happen when the government provided security breaks down. There is nothing to fill the law enforcement gap until the government can respond.
Had we suffered numerous simultaneous major disasters, be they natural or not, in a number of regions, it is entirely possible our government would suffer a complete collapse and be supplanted with some other form of government that would respond to treachery with treachery.
We are now at a crossroad. We can either continue on the course we have chosen where only the government can provide for the security of the state, or choose the path our Founding Fathers wisely provided.
Speaking of calling 911, imagine the people in the devastated area without regular phone service. Even those with cell phones had their service interrupted, and most had no way to recharge their cell phone batteries once they went dead.
