"Their evacuation plan was non existent."There was one, but it was out of date, and worse, was a 72-hour evacuation plan. By the time the mayor and governor got around to ordering it, there were only about 40 hours left before the hurricane hit. I suspect the plan, such as it was, was also sketchy and didn't cover much.
I'm sure the mayor and governor had lots more on their minds than a mere public safety concern like evacuating people ahead of a killer hurricane--like, for instane, how could they get their hands on more of that GRAFT?

"The Mayor cursed and ridiculed his critics as "small thinkers", who said he should have loaded up school buses and gotten people out of the city before the hurricane."
The Mayor knows that he is in big trouble and had better start blaming the other guy, any other guy.

Mr. Mayor also fails to mention that he was supposed to order the mandatory evacuation of New Orleans a full 72 hrs. before the hurricane hit. NOT 24 hrs.How many times during a typical hurricane season does a potentially dangerous storm come into the gulf? And, how accurate are typical landfall forecasts 72 hours before the fact? How many times a year would New Orleans be evacuated if this 72 hour plan were strictly enforced? Does anyone know?

And, how do we know that this picture was taken in NO? An aerial view of flooded school buses in a lot, Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, in New Orleans, LA. The flood is a result of Hurricane Katrina that passed through the area last Monday. (AP Photo/Phil Coale)

Nagin was quoted in that local radio interview -- replayed on CNN and other networks -- that there had been a proposal to use school buses. "School buses!" he ranted with disdain, "School buses! Where are the Greyhounds? Why isn't every bus company coming here to rescue these people."He really said that??

Jeff, agreed I am all for helping the foolish
Where I take issue is with the MSM and the finger pointers,
who seem unwilling to at least acknowledge the additional burden of those who made irresponsible choices.
I'm not suggesting this is the appropriate time to "blame" those who stayed, however it is also inapproiate for the Democrat leaders & the MSM to "blame" the FEDS

Re#139 It is. Once again, we are seeing from the 'rats 'projection'. They know they failed on the state/local level, hence, W's fault. And the MSM will do their d*mnest to give them cover...

Pretty base conclusion I've come to when I realize their failure to act, and then cast off blame, USING what I'd assume they consider 'collateral damage' (gangs, looters, theives, murderers and rapists; the trapped, dying, dead, and the infirm) over the air for political purposes. Nut doesn't fall far from the tree when I consider Cindy Sheehan.
These people make me want to vomit.

Maybe Mayor Nagin would like to explain this picture before he and the rest of his democratic fellow travelers continue to blast the fed's. A question that you will never hear, Katie Couric, Tim Russert, Matt Lauer or Chissy Matthews ask the Mayor or the Governor of Louisiana

But if you used buses from outside the target area, the drivers would go to NOLA, pick up the passengers and drive them to the shelter areas - and then drive home and would be with their families outside the disaster area. Could've just flown in one batch of drivers then had another batch drive in and then have them all drive out. You would have had twice the number of buses on the move plus saved all those from the flood to use later.
