This thing is going to torpedo Bush's presidency.
You mean... he might not be elected in 2008????

I agree. And they ought to knock off blaming the Feds. Technology is great, but it does take time to move things where they need to be. Imagine if this had happened 20 years ago and how long it would have taken to get relief supplies in there. But at least it would not have been broadcast quite so broadly.

I disagree completely. He wasn't 'performing' after 9/11.
He was reacting in accordance with his character........which is exactly what he's doing now.
I haven't seen anything that would give the impression of a lack of sure footing............unless of course, one is influenced by media perception of what he's done this week. He has acted when others who were responsible for the response (the Gov. and mayor) have failed.
And speechwriters have nothing to do with anything. Did you hear his speech in Idaho last week? It was magnificent.

Sorry, but with 4 years of homeland security preparedness, the situation is a mess. Dubya doesn't get a free pass except by those who are squinting so hard they can't see clearly.
Dubya has had an awful summer, seemingly going out of his way to encourage the impression that he is out of touch, inept, and alienated from the folks he leads.
This disaster is icing on the cake. After 4 years of preparedness training and with the added benefit of several days warning, the feds can't get help in for several days as a city descends into madness. Seems that they were caught completely flat footed and are unable to cope.

You mean... he might not be elected in 2008???? No, I mean it will be harder to elect other Republicans in 2006 and 2008.

Exactly....seems so much attention and bashing against those trying to help when it should be directed at the thugs.

I sold my guns 12 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter. It is most defintely time to reconsider that move.

"Nobody will ever mistake him for a great orator...just a great, caring, effective President. JMHO."Yep. Giving great remarks isn't enough for some people. With them it's Oscar or nothin'.

That is a good point. Hopefully after the hurricanes of last summer and now with Katrina, FEMA will make sure supplies are always just a few hours away from major populated areas along the coast. I know it takes time to deploy resources but we have all seen examples in our history where we've responded quicker. But then you also have to look at what part the state and local officials played in those responses and even in other areas this time when comparing performance. The state and local officials in LA screwed this up big time.

I am at a loss for words as to how a major city on the Gulf Coast had ZERO emergency planning. Actually it's worse. What you are seeing is AFTER they implemented an emergency plan 10 years ago according to my sister who lives in the area. If this had happened 10 years ago it would have been even worse.

I've read a lot of stupid posts on this thread, but your abused wife analogy is the stupidest so far.

"President giving speech far more along the lines of that which his critics would have preferred "
Oh, not according to CNN.!!
I am watching CNN International from here in Slovakia.
It is all I can get here.
The CNN InfoB**** lit into it after the president completed
his talk, then some big wheel political correspondent
moaned about how stupid it was for Bush to be there, and it was nothing but a political photo-op for a few Republican govs.
CNN MAKES ME WANT TO PUKE !!!

Since his speech this morning at WH, I have defrosted our freezer, frozen several packages of squash, mopped the kitchen, and picked veggies. I honestly can't remember what he said!
All these events run together. Perhaps there is a transcript.

GW Bush is not the KING of this country, the constitution limits what the president can do in situations like this, until he is asked by a governor or given permission by the congress.
