Lost in the Flood : Why no mention of race or class in TV's Katrina coverage?
Slate ^ | 31 August 2005 | Jack Shafer

can't say I saw everything that the TV newscasters pumped out about Katrina, but I viewed enough repeated segments to say with 90 percent confidence that broadcasters covering the New Orleans end of the disaster demurred from mentioning two topics that must have occurred to every sentient viewer: race and class.

Nearly every rescued person, temporary resident of the Superdome, looter, or loiterer on the high ground of the freeway I saw on TV was African-American. And from the look of it, they weren't wealthy residents of the Garden District. This storm appears to have hurt blacks more directly than whites, but the broadcasters scarcely mentioned that fact.

Now, don't get me wrong. Just because 67% of New Orleans residents are black, I don't expect CNN to rename the storm "Hurricane" Carter in honor of the black boxer. Just because Katrina's next stop after destroying coastal Mississippi was counties that are 25 percent to 86% African-American (according to this U.S. Census map), and 27.9% of New Orleans residents are below the poverty line, I don't expect the Rev. Jesse Jackson to call the news channels to give a comment. But in the their frenzy to beat freshness into the endless loops of disaster footage that have been running all day, broadcasters might have mentioned that nearly all the visible people left behind in New Orleans are of the black persuasion, and mostly poor.

To be sure, some reporters sidled up to the race and class issue. I heard them ask the storm's New Orleans victims why they hadn't left town when the evacuation call came. Many said they were broke—"I live from paycheck to paycheck," explained one woman. Others said they didn't own a car with which to escape and that they hadn't understood the importance of evacuation.

Predators {Human or Animal] follow their prey. If the Prey migrates, Predators follow. If the Prey stays, so do the Predators.

The "New Orleans Poor" didn't Vacate, before the Storm. Those, that had preyed upon the "Poor of New Orleans, stayed, TOO. The Ratio of "Good Folks to Predators changed. The Result: Chaos in the Big Easy.

If New Orleans is Emptied, those Predators will follow their Prey.

Those, that preyed upon the Poor from Mexico {in Mexico}, follow their Prey across our Borders.

Not "All Illegals" are chasing a dream. Some are following their Prey.

Should We change the Rules, to make "hunting Predators" EASIER?

This slate article is race baiting... there are people that want to make this about the issues that will gain them political capitol.

I truely find that disgusting.

But we will see more of it i am sure....

There is no race issue here... there reason there are so many blacks that are stuck in NO is becuase the compromise 67% by the articles # of the population. So by the laws of avereages there will be more of them then any other race...

The only once that have an issue with race in this is those that are bringing it up like this slate articles author and doing for nothing more than trying to gain political capitol.

True enough.  Thank decades of failed liberal policies to cement this.

All of us armchair generals need to get our selves down there and help. It would be far better to have a vast surplus of help, as we were blessed with on 9/11, then a horrible vacuum such as is being reported.

I am leaving now from Danbury Connecticut to go down and find one person who I can bring back and help restart their life. Woe to us when we get hit and are stranded.

It would be had been nice if all the tax money that we have given had provided an organized response system. but it hasn’t and so I’ll go down south as far as I can and pluck just one person from this hell myself.

Good-bye.

The facts are evident to all who see the video. Why should broadcasters step onto thin PC ice when the facts are self evident?

This clown obviously missed Wolf Blitzer on CNN who said:"They're all so poor and so black"

What condescending ignorance.

it's all BS. I was a kid during the '77 blackout and can tell you that looters were mostly non white in my Brooklyn neighborhood. My family was by no means rich not really middle-class but not dirt poor either. The difference is that we were brought up right and my family didn't go looting using our class as an excuse. I'm tired of this BS where people keep saying "but they are poor" and don't have anything. Too damn bad; work for it. As for Wolf, wtf does he know???? He's CNN.

Rush received an email from a listener today who hit the nail on the head...why is it that the democrats can find lots of buses to bus the poor black folks in to vote for slime like John Kerry, but are somehow missing in action and unable to provide buses to bus them out of life-threatening circumstances like this!!

Greetings from all of us at FlushHillary.com

"Say, Bob, why are these African-Americans so poor to begin with?"

Because they were to lazy to take advantage of the FREE EDUCATION we taxpayers provided them.

I gather you grew up in Bushwick. Didn't know there were any palefaces left in '77.

I've been calling N.O. the plantation of the south...the dems politics--welfare--nanny state has not allowed these folks to pull their selves to the level they easily could...it's the left and the dems that have created this situation...probably most of them are on welfare...it's so sad. SHAME ON THEM...the white rats have done this to these people.

All I know is Whitey is going to be blamed.

Fact is that in ole French Louisianne many of the slavemasters were black, and a caste system within the blacks there persists to this day. It is worse than any white/black racism you will see now.

The old TV show "Frank's Place" touched on this aspect of NOLA.
