Reid, to his credit, didn't politicize it too much other than making sure Byrd got special recognition on the legislation for his '06 campaign. I can live with that.

Schumer, on the other hand, let it be known a full scale blame game against Bush would be launched once the immediate aftermath was dealt with.

You're probably right. Or maybe another state will offer a facility.

Good, the idea of that many people in one place who have so many problems is scary. I feel bad about those who must go somewhere else but we cannot have another SuperDome situation evolve.

You forgot his $200 haircut.

Nice rant, though. I couldn't agree more with you about the obnoxious Koppel.

.........

$200 dollar hair cut? On Ted Koppel?....LOL, that's a pricey rug(toupee') on Koppels "dome". That's the type of thing that gets me fired up, when fluffy, poofy, coifed and manicured individuals presume to tell others how it's gonna be or should be, when they are too worried about chipping their finger nail in the comfy air conditioned office environs. Ugh, vile creatures, they are so vile and contemptable.

Not to worry. We have more county commisions engaged on this now. We will not turn our neighbors away. Guaranteed.
The naysaying nitwits generally have too many arrests and drug convictions to be allowed onto a military installation in the state of Texas.

They can put the refugees anywhere they want. Didn't the Supreme Court just rule that your land is now our land.

Not family oriented, but I just want to have this play in Kopel's ear over and over for the next 23 hours.

Look, I don't mean to be tacky here BUT......the rescue plan is for first to save those in danger of dying and to fix the levee if possible. Those people at the SB are alive, have food and water. They may not be comfortable, they may not be happy but they are not dying.

We are falling right into the trap of the media. Lament the status of the poor people waiting for someone to get them out. Blame the people helping for not doing a better job.

Of course, they have had tragedy but they seem to have enough strength to run into the stores and loot so they are not in too bad a shape.

The priority is for rescuing those in the attics in danger of drowning, those injured and ill and getting them to a safer place.

If those in the SB and elsewhere are sincere about wanting help and to get out - they would not be shooting at the rescue people and preventing help from coming.

These people can do something for themselves - such as devise shade, clean up their area as best as possible, collect the trash and move it aside and move any dead bodies as far away as possible. They could also collect the delivered food/water and distribute it, advise others where to go for the help they need and organize teams to clean, to care for the children while others sleep, etc.

But - no, the media reports on them and furthers their whining about how they are getting no help. They sit and wait and complain because the worker bees are not moving heaven and earth fast enough to get them the appropriate luxuries.

We might remember that many have lived in concentration camps and managed to survive with far less.

Now - I expect those people to set about helping each other, identifying those that need care, provide work teams until they can be moved. They are humans afterall - not cattle.

Because the government will want to keep the numbers as low as possible... they do it all the time with all sorts of illnesses.. like HIV/Aids... the patient has the disease and dies from pneumonia (caused by a weakened immune system) the cause of death: pneumonia not HIV/Aids so we keep the "official" numbers down and it makes the government look good.

This "it's been three/four days" thing has really been bothering me, so I went back and looked it up.

Heck, I bet NO was still having high winds then.

And -- and check me on this -- I believe it was late Tuesday night when the levee first breached, am I wrong about that?

I agree on the time factor...However local emergency officials, whose job it is to know all there is to know about preparing for hurricanes and floods, should have known from study of prior hurricanes, that even in a mandatory evacuation, a good portion of people do not leave, especially the poor and the elderly, as well as those who own small businesses and stay to protect them. Given that, they would have known that more would need the shelter of last resort and even more would need to be rescued if a worse case scenario occurred. But they didn't ask for help, or at the very least they asked for very little help. The intial number of troops ordered in were 2,000(per a FOX interview), not enough for this type of operation.

Another excuse being offered by local officials is the lack of communication tools such as phones available. Once again a good emergency operations plan includes contingency plans for this. Obviously we now know that theirs was not a good one...
