WASHINGTON (AFP) - At least 20 oil rigs and platforms are missing in the Gulf of Mexico and a ruptured gas pipeline is on fire after Hurricane Katrina tore through the region, a US Coast Guard official said.

"We have confirmed at least 20 rigs or platforms missing, either sunk or adrift, and one confirmed fire where a rig was," Petty Officer Robert Reed of the Louisiana Coast Guard told AFP.

All of the missing rigs were in the Gulf of Mexico, Reed said citing Coast Guard overflights of the area and information from oil companies.

He could not confirm the location of the blaze but said it would "eventually burn out" and no fire-fighting intervention was needed.

not 19? not 21? an oil rig is a pretty hard thing to lose when you have surface radar.

Fox just showed one of those platforms, washed up on a sandbar on Dauphin Island, AL, 60 miles away from where it was.

Personally, I think Hugo Chavez snuck up behind the storm and pinched them. ;)

Bush had the special forces blow them up to increase the revenues that
Haliburton takes in. It should be in the NYT by morning

I saw that yesterday. When they first noticed it, it was up against a big bridge down there. Then it floated or was towed to that sand bar.

beware of the scare reporting tactics!

The terms "Platforms and rigs" are NOT interchangeable.

Just as drudge reported the "loss" of 95% of the oil production this so-called report of "rigs and platforms" is a play on words for the biggest scare.

Drudge's report of 95% loss was only correct if you realize that with EVERY major storm, the platforms and rigs are evacuated for safety - some platforms keep skeleton crews aboard though. SO for almost every hurricane that goes through that region there is a major "loss of production"

The other critical part of the energy equation is what is the situation with the refineries.

You could have 100 percent of the oil fields operational and still have problems getting the crude to the consumer if you don't have refineries functioning. This is the real bottle neck in the whole setup.

The President needs to move boldly and issue an Executive Directive to rescind environmental objections and convert several former coastline military sites and build federally protected refineries, to meet critical national needs. This wouldn't happen overnight, I know, but the needs of the nation, and the economic revitalization of communities hurt by BRACC would would be greatly served.

Thoughts?

There is more than enough room for new refineries in Wyoming, and they would probably welcome the jobs that come with them.

OTOH, Since many cities are already in the power production business, why can't they help out local revenues by building and running a refinery or two?
