The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

A suggestion the water if from the river does not mean it is. From what I see there is no major break in the River levee.

----Can someone give an analysis of how Gov. Blanco and Gov. Barbour are handling this event, and the future political impact of their performance?----

I don't know about Barbour, but I can tell you that "Lisping Bitch" Blanco will run for re-election in 2007 as The Courageous Leader Who Saw Us All Through Katrina, and that the people of Louisiana will buy it and give her 65% of the vote along with another four years to embarrass us.

She has to know. Cars are covered and leaking oil and fuel, dead people, dogs and cats, natural gas is leaking under the water... need I go on? Unless she is more clueless than I think she knows all this.

I was watching the group report and they said something to the effect they were reconsidering dropping the sandbags and considering filling shipping containers with sand or fill and dropping them instead...

Toxic soup.

Remember the anti-Americans are out in force looking for any excuse to bash America.

Well every disaster since I can remember has had it's toxic substances.

What about the Eastern seaboard rivers polluted just as bad as the current situation in New Orleans.

Dang, all you environmental nitpickers and nay sayers need to lighten up.

All this will get cleaned up in due time and I doubt very seriously that many will remain sick or have problems for long periods due to any pollutants.

However, they might depending on whether or not the scum sucking ambulance chasing lawyers can find someone to sue.

DUMB QUESTION TIME - WHERE ARE HELICOPTERS TO DROP 1000LB POLY PLY BAGS OF SAND INTO THE BREECH? WHERE ARE THE EMPTY BARGES TO SINK AT THE BREECH TO DO THE SAME THING???

The misunderstood fact is that these items are not just lying around waiting to be used. There are logistical items necessary before these short term fixes can be implimented - you just can't snap your fingers. The waterways are probably so full of debris alone that it'll take days before a barge can be maneuvered into position. Heavy lift helicopters are also days away as well as filling the bags of sand - again, something you don't do at the snap of one's fingers. Its easy doing such back-seat flood control work whereas we don't have a clue from our computer terminals what is really happening or the full extent of the difficulties that will need to be overcome just to handle the basics.

If DC or NY got hit again they would be the first ones with their hands out saying the rest of the country has to help them rebuild.

We don't have to wonder, AggieMama, we know that when NYC was attacked we all pulled together as Americans. And I think even most liberal Northeasterners feel that we are all in this together. You are right, there will be plenty of time to discuss paying for this rescue/rebuild after people are safe.

Thanks, I didn't think it was very deep. Looking at the slabs of cement sitting sideways on the causeway it looked very shallow. Isn't a lot of this because of the silt that washes in when they dump Mississippi water into her during flood events?

Just a thought...it will take the cruise lines an amount of time to realign their ports of call. I would like to see the affected ships take the initiative to provide their ships for emergency supply transport. I don't think that setting them up as floating refugee centers is viable.
