Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Tropical Storm 12
They (Jim Cantore) were in an Army Retirement complex in Gulfport and were shut in by a 27 foot surge. Had to move to the upper floors. I think they lost their broadcast capability.
I hadn't heard anyone mention the possibility of gators on the loose. (Scary thought).
"My son is in the WI National Guard. He spent that night in Baraboo with his unit, and they were under tornado warnings during their "sendoff" picnic.
Guess where he is now? Camp Shelby, MS, just south of Hattiesburg.:("
God Bless your son for his service! We ar all very gratefull.
That's just it, the flooding could get even worse for NOLA even though the storm is long past.
Just ignore the idiot. I have family all over Louisianna and had to ask the same question today......and not a one called me ignorant! :-)
I have heard talk about critters somewhat today, but not enough to make it stick in your head.
Is there a thread that has pictures? I want to save as many as possible. I have about 30 megabytes of pics and videos from right after 9-11. Of course now the media has filtered them and they are hard to find at all. Thanks....
People who work at the exhibit get to bring their families and stay on the ship during hurricanes. They say you can't even tell it is storming when you are below deck.
yup, they've been calling him Orli all weekend.
Sounds like to me an act of God. Hmmmmmmm
The flooding could be bad, since the ground is already very wet for August.
Good post with important info.
Japan has more or less the same level of technology.
The difference (and don't flame, it's just an objective observation here) is that after these severe, get-out-of-the-area warnings, in Japan there is about a 0% rate of idiots who stay and/or who venture toward the coast and/or otherwise try to 'show off' or have senseless 'typhoon parties' and end up dead. In Japan, they are almost all unanimously follow government orders, heading for safety and respecting nature in the process. Little to no sense of 'macho' in Japan in the face of devastating typhoons or tsunamis.
CNN now showing pictures of the Casinos. SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE.

No, not necessarily. Many places have impassable roads (both water and debris) and all the communication/electrical systems down. So unless there is a ham operator in that area, with access to undamaged equipment, there isn't a way to get the word out. It is remarkable what many persons have survived, and how many make it through devastating storms, so let's don't jump to conclusions yet.

I saw that..and in just about pitch dark...here..gator..gator..gator..
Yeap. Just had to look it up. Steve is 13 miles closer to the eye, :-).
I had to leave for awhile for a music lesson. Has there been anymore mention of the people who were supposedly hanging from telephone poles?
