Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

After hurricane Hugo, the most directly helpful groups were the fire departments and church groups, with food aid and chainsaws. The Government was mostly useless and didn't even get in gear for the first couple of days.

All evacuations are completed at this time. No one should be outdoors now.

Only 15 foot seas but..

Coast Guard Rescues 13 Surfers Off Texas

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050829/ap_on_re_us/katrina_surf_rescue

SURFSIDE BEACH, Texas - Thirteen surfers had to be pulled to safety Sunday after becoming fatigued in 15-foot seas created by Hurricane Katrina, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Troy Davis said the rip tides were strong and most of the rescues were 400 to 500 yards off Quintana Beach, about 60 miles south of Houston on the Gulf of Mexico.

Sunday evening, nearby Surfside Beach closed the Surfside jetties that are used by many surfers as a launching point.

Hurricane Katrina, a powerful Category 5 storm, was expected to make landfall Monday morning near New Orleans. A hurricane warning was in effect for the north-central Gulf Coast from Morgan City, La., to the Alabama-Florida line.

They learned a lot from the Florida storms last year. By the time Jeanne struck, they were very efficient. I just hope they cycles their staff through so they got hands-on experience last year.
