Blue state blues
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | August 27, 2005 | Editorial

You know you live in a blue state when ...

Detroit is in the throes of a budget crisis that dwarfs anything Connecticut has seen. With a $300 million deficit in its $1.4 billion budget for 2005-06 and bankruptcy looming, Detroit has laid off hundreds of workers and is in the process of idling at least 584 police officers and 150 firefighters. Thousands of school employees could get the ax, and up to 40 schools could be closed. Municipal-employee unions have made $47 million in health-care concessions. Civilian employees took 10 percent pay cuts to save $24 million. Taxes are going through the roof, yet the fiscal hemorrhaging continues.

But in the midst of this fiscal chaos, the city will spend $1 million to build a display pen for 20 European fallow deer and native Michigan animals at the city-run Belle Isle Nature Zoo, which yearly spends hundreds of thousands more than it takes in. The contractor for the patronage job is a longtime friend of the mayor who has no experience in working with zoos or animals.

City officials claim their hands are tied because voters authorized borrowing the money to pay for the pen last fall. But that was before the enormity of the city's budget crisis was revealed, and there's really nothing stopping the mayor from saying the city just can't afford the project while public safety and education are so threatened.

But this is how budget fiascos are perpetuated in Michigan, Connecticut and the other blue states: tax and spend yourself into a crisis, then tax and spend some more in the name of fiscal stability, but hold back enough public money to pay off political cronies.

Did Detroit reelect their criminal Mayor recently? Is the election this fall?

Like with most government "budget crises" this is also contrived by continually growing the budget.

Don't feed the fallow deer; don't build the new stadium; don't start a new program; don't raise wages; don't extend higher benefits.

"Budget crisis" is simply a ploy to contiually justify new taxes.

It's amazing. The writers of RoboCop (1987) were psychic!
Plot Outline:
"In a dystopic & crime ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him..."
Quotes:
RoboCop: "Excuse me, I have to go. Somewhere there is a crime happening."

You have to relocate your dead because they keep voting Democrat and it's no longer safe to visit them in the cemetery.

It is more of a black thing than a red or a blue thing if one were to be honest about it.

Did Detroit reelect their criminal Mayor recently?

It was the machine, I tell! It was the long lines in the abandoned neighborhoods, I tell you! A big Democrat-run city is going bankrupt, and I tell you it's another step in the Karl Rove plan to subject liberty-loving peoples into surrendering liberty to evil, chimp-faced, BusHitler vote-machine-controlling Republicans! This is it, guys, the ultimate Karl Rove tactic, forcibly electing Democrat spendthrift mayors!

Where is that darn aluminum foil hat? *ack*

Taxes are going through the roof, yet therefore the fiscal hemorrhaging continues.

"Did Detroit reelect their criminal Mayor recently? Is the election this fall?"

The election looms this fall.

The local press, especially the newspapers, have been savaging the mayor, and in fact the stories in this post came from those sources. Don't hold your breath on getting a new mayor, as Coleman Young was in power for some 32 years. Young was savaged by local press, and presided over such fiascos as Devil's Night and a mass exodus of middle-class residents.

It's a shame, because the last mayor was really moving things along nicely.

I'm sure we could work through this budgetary problem if the politicians and public employees of Detroit agreed to steal only half as much next year.

He's a brutha in a city of bruthas. Time to really question the intelligence of black voters who vote for the color of the skin instead of the content of the character.

It's a model city, just as Chavez says Cuba is a model country.

The leftist Libs oppose opportunity for black people just as their ancestors fought integration in the 1950s and their ancestors' ancestors held onto slavery in the 1860s. Leftists all. Give 'em the boot!

Apparently the Dems don't understand this simple point.
Seems like this is the norm in every inner city in the country.

I think that the DNCs new slogan should be SNAFU.
Everyone knows what that means.

D@MN IT!.... what is our exit strategy and when will our money and the lives of good Americans stop being wasted in that Muslim QUAGMIRE!....hahahahahahahahaha

Gee, I crack myself up.

I'd rather live in the brush by the side of the road in Texas than in Detroit.... visited there for an interview, flew in after 9 pm... checked out the job and was gone by 1 pm the next day...what a sh#t hole.

That is a great thing. I remember reading that 47% of the population of Detroit was functionally illiterate! Can you imagine a worae indictment of the public schools?! The people of Detroit should be marching in the street to close them all down.
