Conservative Spotlight: Liberty Film Festivalby Katie Farber
Posted Aug 24, 2005It is commonly assumed that Hollywood, from directors to actors, is liberal. The Liberty Film Festival, set to take place October 21-23, is an annual event that aims to debunk this myth.
Started last year, the Liberty Film Festival, co-founded and co-directed by Jason Apuzzo and Govindini Murty, is Hollywood’s first and only conservative film festival. It seeks to give prominence to talented filmmakers who cannot get their work shown within the existing Hollywood system, as well as to educate the public on films from a conservative perspective through commentary on their blog, Libertas.“We just grew very uncomfortable with the fact that our side was not being allowed to get their films made or if we were making our films, that the mainstream studio system, the distribution apparatus and the mainstream film festivals would not pick them up,” Murty told Human Events. “The infrastructure of the town is run by the left and they are literally blacklisting the right and not allowing their work to be shown.”
“It’s a very bad situation because the public thinks that there are only liberals in this town and there are actually a lot of good conservatives who are doing a lot of good work, but it needs to be seen,” she said. Both Apuzzo and Murty are familiar with the film industry. Apuzzo is a writer and director who grew up in Los Angeles, and Murty is an actress and writer who has lived in Los Angeles for the past five years. As conservatives, they tried to “go along to get along” and “not be political” in order blend into the industry. However, they became dissatisfied with the fact that those on the right have such a difficult time getting their work shown and accepted in liberal Hollywood.
“I think it’s good for everybody if conservatives have a chance to get their work out and the Liberty Film Festival was a vision by Jason and me as a forum for conservative, libertarian and right-of-center filmmakers to show their work to the public,” Murty said. Unknown even to many who live there, the leftist elite did not always dominate Hollywood. In fact, many Republicans initially helped establish Hollywood, and Republicans founded many major studios. Louis B. Mayer of MGM Studios was one prime example. There were also a number of Republican actors and directors, such as Alfred Hitchcock and Cecil B. DeMille.
Even though Hollywood leaned to the right, the conservatives existed peacefully with the actors who were liberal. “What we always like to point out is that when Republicans ran the film industry, Democrats could still work. You had Democrats such as Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn and John Huston and Billy Wilder who had thriving careers,” Murty told Human Events. Today, liberal Hollywood actively defies the War on Terror, but when World War II broke out and the United States was led by a liberal President, Republicans still supported the war, Murty said. “Republican Hollywood went out of its way to support a Democratic war effort because they could see there was a larger issue at stake and that was the security of our country,” she said. “It’s just very sad today that when Democrats lead Hollywood, they can’t look beyond their own petty interest to support President Bush and the War on Terror, when it’s collective national security that’s at risk.”
Apuzzo and Murty are hopeful that Hollywood is changing for the better. They said that while there were definitely good filmmakers such as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg who evolved during the late 1960s when the left took over, there is a new generation with different ideas and excitement that may have a voice very soon. The only obstacle is the fear of not getting work, but once conservatives make more of a name for themselves, supporters will surface and more well-known actors will emerge. More than 80 films have been submitted to the Liberty Film Festival already, with submissions focusing on everything from the War on Terror and immigration to right-to-life issues and religious faith.
The festival looks for submissions that fit three criteria: They must be artistically good and entertaining films, their ideas must celebrate conservative or libertarian values (broad issues such as free speech, democracy, family, religious faith and patriotism), and they should be works that have little chance of being seen elsewhere. The festival is supported by a number of private individuals. “The main sponsor last year was the Foundation for Free Markets, whose president, Paul Harberger has been a wonderful support to us, and they will be supporting us again this year,” Murty said. There are other individuals within the Los Angeles community who help back the festival as well.

The Liberty Film Festival, Hollywood’s Conservative Film Festival, Announces 2005 Festival Dates and Call for Entries

The 2005 Liberty Film Festival, Hollywood’s premier event for conservative and libertarian film, will be held this October 21-23, 2005 at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.The Liberty Film Festival showcases films that celebrate the traditional American values of free speech, patriotism, and religious freedom. We also celebrate the spread of freedom and democracy around the world, and welcome international filmmakers who advance these values through their art.
The festival is currently accepting feature and short film submissions (both documentary and narrative). The festival will hold three juried competitions for Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, and Best Screenplay (unproduced). Best Feature Film and Best Short Film winners will each be awarded the Libertas Prize. The Screenplay Competition will have a $1000 prize. The deadline for all entries is August 22, 2005.
The Liberty Film Festival continues its innovative programming this year with a Producers Series, which includes panels on Film Production, TV Production, Screenwriting, and Film Finance & Distribution. The Festival will also feature a debate on the 1950’s blacklist. Hollywood's New War Effort: Terrorism Chic

Slow to awaken after the 9/11 attacks, Hollywood has finally come around to contributing what it can in the War on Terror: namely, glossy, star-studded movies that sympathize with the enemy.
Hard to believe? Here's the pitch: with box-office numbers trending down, studio executives are suddenly greenlighting movies they can describe to shareholders as 'controversial' or 'timely.' Whether the films are anti-American or otherwise demoralizing to the war effort is apparently immaterial. Its appetite whetted by "Fahrenheit 9/11"'s $222 million worldwide gross, Hollywood thinks it's found a formula for both financial security and critical plaudits: noxious anti-American storylines, bathed in the warm glow of star power.
Here are just a few films already in the pipeline:
- "V For Vendetta." From Warner Brothers and the creators of "The Matrix" comes this film about a futuristic Great Britain that's become a 'fascist state.' A masked 'freedom fighter' named V uses terror tactics (including bombing the London Underground) to undermine the government - leading to a climax in which the British Parliament is blown up. Natalie Portman stars as a skinhead who turns to 'the revolution' after doing time as a Guantanamo-style prisoner.
- "Munich." Steven Spielberg directs this film about the aftermath of the 1972 Olympic terror attacks that killed eleven Israeli athletes. "Munich"'s screenplay is written by playwrite Tony Kushner ("Angels in America"), who has been quoted as saying: "I think the founding of the state of Israel was for the Jewish people a historical, moral, political calamity ... I wish modern Israel hadn¹t been born." The film focuses on the crisis of conscience undergone by Israeli commandos tasked with killing PLO terrorists - rather than on the barbarity of the terrorists themselves.
- "Untitled Oliver Stone 9/11 Project." Paramount will distribute Oliver Stone's new film recounting the rescue of two Port Authority officers after the 9/11 attacks. The film will star Nicholas Cage and Maggie Gyllenhaal - who recently suggested that America was responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
As for Stone, he had this to say only a month after 9/11: "This attack was pure chaos, and chaos is energy. All great changes have come from people or events that were initially misunderstood, and seemed frightening, like madmen."
"Syriana." Starring George Clooney and Matt Damon, this Warner Brothers film - set during the first Bush administration - features a plot by American oil companies and the U.S. government to redraw Middle East borders for greater oil profiteering. The film even depicts a handsome, 'tragic' suicide bomber driven to jihad after being fired by an American oil company! The film's climax comes with the jihadist launching an explosive device into an oil tanker as American oil barons and Saudi officials look on.
"The Scorpion's Gate." Sony has optioned former terrorism-czar Richard Clarke's novel about oil companies and Washington politicians colluding to reshape the map of the Middle East for greater oil profiteering - this time by launching a global nuclear war.
"The Chancellor Manuscript." Paramount reworks Robert Ludlum¹s 1977 thriller into an anti-Patriot Act star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio. Here's the film's screenwriter, Michael Seitzman: "We live in this crazy post-Patriot Act environment where Benjamin Franklin¹s warning that 'those that give up essential liberties for temporary security don¹t deserve either one' are being ignored, so the subject matter seemed ripe."
"No True Glory: The Battle for Fallujah." Universal has attached Harrison Ford to star as real-life General Jim Mattis - in this story blaming the White House for the deaths of fifty Marines in one of the Iraq war's deadliest battles. Based on the book of the same name by Bing West.
"American Dreamz." This 'satire' from Universal Pictures deals with Pakistani suicide bombers out to kill the US president. The film stars Hugh Grant, Richard Dreyfuss, Willem Dafoe and Mandy Moore. According to writer-director Paul Weitz ("American Pie"), "The film is a comic examination of ... cultural obsessions" like the War on Terror "and how they can anaesthetise us to the actual issues of our day."
"Terminus." Set in the Middle East of the future, this Warner Brothers film depicts a 'disillusioned' war correspondent covering an 'insurgency' he decides he must support. The producer, Basil Iwanyk, says: "It deals head on with what some call insurgency, what some call guerilla warfare and what some call freedom fighting."
"Jarhead." This Universal release, starring Jamie Foxx and Jake Gyllenhaal, deals with the 'dehumanization' of Marine trainees prior to and during the 1991 Gulf War. Based on Andrew Swofford's notorious and questionable memoirs of the same name.
The above list, incidentally, should not be taken as comprehensive. For example, Paramount also has projects in the works about a 'reformed' al-Qaeda operative, and about the victim of an Iraqi suicide bomber. Little about these projects has been made public.
One thing should be obvious from this list: left-wing agitprop filmmaking is no longer the purview of desperate, 'indie' filmmakers with shaky camcorders and maxed-out credit cards. The films listed above are being made by large, multi-national corporations - and will feature sophisticated, expensive marketing campaigns with A-list stars. Imagine Leni Riefenstahl cross-promoting "Triumph of the Will" with People Magazine covers and E! Channel specials. That's more or less what Hollywood has in mind.
Hollywood has shifted strategies in its opposition to the War on Terror. No longer content to let clumsy, uncouth documentarians like Michael Moore or Robert Greenwald conduct its foreign policy, Tinseltown is rolling out big guns like Harrison Ford and Leo DiCaprio and George Clooney - complete with their p.r. firms, dazzling smiles, and easy charm.
It's imperative for conservatives to shift strategies, as well. It will no longer be sufficient for outraged conservatives to storm talk radio, the Internet or Fox News with the idea of verbally 'rebutting' these movies like dour lawyers in a courtroom. When these films arrive, with their star-power, swelling soundtracks and digital effects, they'll hit the public with the force of a hurricane - and there'll be no obvious butt of derision like Michael Moore for talking-head conservatives to target. These filmmakers and their movies will be much more polished, subtle - and insidious. And these films will be more dangerous than "Fahrenheit 9/11" because their strategy will be to entertain.
The proper 'response' for this sort of thing is simple, if complex in execution. At some point conservatives need to raise capital, pick up cameras and start making movies of their own - much like Mel Gibson did with "The Passion." And conservatives should do this not simply to 'rebut' the other side, but to add depth and imagination to what has become a wasteland of popular entertainment. Most Hollywood insiders - even liberals - agree that Hollywood is in a creative depression. More conservative voices can only help what has become a bleak situation for the town, both artistically and financially.
Movies are a powerful force in shaping the imagination of our culture, and in defining how history is remembered. It will be a great shame if all we leave behind from this vital period in American history is a shoddy trail of "Syriana"s, "V For Vendetta"s or "American Dreamz" - rather than a "Casablanca" or a "Notorious." But conservatives obviously can't wait for Hollywood to do that for them - they're going to have to do it themselves.

"Voices of Iraqi Freedom" - US Premiere (30 mins., 2005)
Kurdish Shorts from the First Iraqi Film Festival. These shorts, with the theme of anti-terrorism and anti-violence, are part of a two-part program created by noted Kurdish/Iraqi filmmaker Jano Rosebiani's Evini Films to train young Iraqis to express themselves artistically through cinema. The program takes 20 young Kurds and 20 young Iraqis, pairs them with film professionals in hands-on training, and then screens their short films throughout Iraq. Cinema production and exhibition were virtually banned in Iraq for thirty years under Saddam Hussein - this program is the first to rejuvenate filmmaking in a free Iraq.

As our "100th Birthday Tribute to Ayn Rand," we'll be screening the 1942 Italian classic We The Living, based on Ayn Rand's novel of the same name. The film stars Alida Valli and Rossano Brazzi as young lovers in post-revolutionary Russia who must choose between conformity with the Communist Party, or the dictates of their own hearts. Mussolini banned the film for its anti-totalitarian message, and attempted to destroy all existing prints. Thought lost for many years, the film negative was rediscovered in the 1960s by Hank and Erika Holzer and restored, with Ayn Rand's guidance. Rarely seen, this film classic combines philosophy and art in a work of compelling drama (B & W, with subtitles). Directed by Goffredo Alessandrini, the film's restoration was produced by Duncan Scott and Hank & Erika Holzer.
Special introductions by producer Duncan Scott, and by Jeff Britting of the Ayn Rand Institute. There will also be a 10 minute intermission during the film.
