I dunno about the "talented" part. Even when I was a young fella, knew nothing about Fonda's radicalism, and found her physically attractive, I never-the-less was consistently irritated by her screen presence. I vividly remember, the first time I watched Barefoot in the Park, repeatedly wishing that Robert Redford would stuff a sock in her yapp, or just deck her.

About three million people died in Indochina following communist take-overs there. This mass slaughter was held at bay only by US soldiers and US assistance to local military forces.

Those three million died because America withdrew, and anyone, everyone, who had a hand in causing that withdrawal must share in the guilt. The people Fonda most admired and still admires in this world have the blood of millions on their hands, and she does too. She will never recognize what she did because how could she live with it if she did?

No.... Jane Fonda WAS a reasonably attractive, mediocre actress who got where she is today by virtue of birth (to an actual "talented actor"), marriage (1st to a pervert, then to a Communist, and finally to an asshole, all rich of course), and a visa stamp to North Vietnam.

Attempts to reconstruct her in the eyes of a new generation will fail, simply because she's too wrinkled up to appeal to minimal attention span of the "OH MY GAWD, IS THAT ASHTON? HE IS SO COOOOL!" crowd, and because there are a whole bunch of folks who still remember what a traitor she is, and will probably outlive her.

The author misses a very important point about the whole Jane Fonda affair in Vietnam, and this truly goes to the heart of the immorality of that war from our nation's perspective.

A government that does not have the legal means and/or the political will to prosecute someone like Jane Fonda for open acts of treason had no business engaging in that military campaign in the first place.

If Fonda had simply said years ago that she'd been a damn fool and that she was sorry to her soul for what she'd done, if she'd spent time, a very long time...without publicity, visiting V.A. hospitals, if she'd put her money where her mouth is...ah, but she's not smart enough, nor does she love this country enough. To her credit, Fonda is willing to acknowledge that she should have “listened more” and “talked less” during her years as a Vietnam protester: “Watching some taped interviews years later,” she writes, “I wanted to shout, ‘Will someone please tell her to shut up?’”

If so, Jane seems to be pleading stupidity as a defense. Apparantly, she has a point. She hasn't learned to keep her mouth shut yet.
