Amazing. Believe it when I see it will be the common sentiment on this.
Lets hope they mean it.
Standing back is unusually blunt?
No new news here.......

The feds must be getting worried about the restless natives (of the USA). They are blowing more smoke than usual.
Of course, until we see the present waist high rusty cow fence replaced by a modern multiple fence system, we will know it is only smoke and lies, meant to gull the sheeple back to sleep.
After a long established history of deliberate indifference to this problem, I'll need more than wind to convince me.
Rather than taking Mr. Chertoff at his words, I'll wait and see what their actions are. And THAT BETTER NOT BE AMNESTY I SMELL!
Translation...ignore the problem completely and continue minimal enforcement of current immigration law and border security.

Chertoff is getting more press now...he and La Gubernadora made the local front page above the fold. Need to see if it's online, yet...
LOL! I'll believe that when I see it, Secretary Chertoff!
And I won't be holding my breath!
Care to be more specific, Secty Chertoff? This sounds suspiciously like all the other flakey pronouncements from the administration on this subject.
Well, WTF have you been doing all these years, jack-ass? This clown has about the same amount of common sense as fatso Tommy Ridge. Is there a brain infection in DC? (That was a rhetorical question).
More amnesty bllsht from the hacks in DC who are supposedly in charge of Homeland Security
Pretty much what they have been doing all along, just stepping back an watching the open flood gates.
Snore... How about enforcing the law in the Fed gov's
immediate vicinity, like Washington D.C., Northen Va.,
and Maryland. That would be a start. When there are vast
round-ups and deportations of these invaders and
a halt to legal immigration the Feds will regain some
credibility in my eyes.
Liar weasel. The Bush administration does everything it can to make it easier for the illegals to come in. They even called the minute men vigilantes. These comments only are meant to deflect the anger of the public, while stabbing us all in the back.
The Feds will get tough on illegals like the UN deals with terrorists...."Stop!" Or we'll tell you to "Stop!" again...
But bayourod keeps telling us that Americans aren't at all concerned about illegal immigration, and that no Americans are negatively affected by illegal immigration. Perhaps bayourod should contact Michael Chertoff and inform him that he's wrong on this subject. And if that doesn't get Chertoff to start seeing things bayourod's way on illegal immigration, bayourod would then probably call Chertoff a racist and an Anti.
Yeah, sure. Left to its own wishes, the Bush administration will do a slow motion mock immigration enforcement, full of publicity and promises, but with only a small number of highly visible deportations. Since there is no promise or intention to protect the border, we can expect the flow of illegals into the country to be little abated.
Team Bush has barely begun to wake to the political peril that they have opened for themselves and the Republican party. The loss of Congress is possible in 2006 or in 2008, with a loss of the Presidency as well. And a major domestic terrorist incident that implicated the Bush administration's lax border security would likely result in a major and potentially successful impeachment effort.
For the slower students in the class, imagine the effect of several hundred dead Americans, leaving behind grieving relatives camped out in several locations demanding Bush's impeachment for failing to secure the borders. Do you think the media might hype the effort? Or would they even need to for a decisive slice of the Republican electorate to abandon Bush?
