Televangelist calls for Chavez' death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Let me tell you something else, as a person who has supported his "ministry"----his tv show is produced by money from Christians who donate their funds so that God's work can be done! They donate to the program to get the gospel out, not to have the program used as a political assassination advocate!

Pat can say whatever he wants when he is interviewed, although I think the calling for murder is wrong...but it is unethical and immoral to use the show produced with donations for Christian work, to call for murder of another humanbeing. I find it especially incredible that Robertson would send out this cry for the murder of a dispicable leader when he himself was a business PARTNER with the despot Charles Taylor of Liberia!

I TiVo'd his show when he called for the assasination, and he is bald face lying when he now says today, that he was "misquoted"! As my daddy always said,

"oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve"....

Pat needs to apologise and admit he was wrong to say what he did. He would do much good for the body of Christ if he would do that.

I do. He would not, and did not. Don't you think Jesus had numerous chances to kill evil doers? Yet, he said that we should bless those who curse us, and do good to those who hate us.

"Yet, he said that we should bless those who curse us, and do good to those who hate us."

He also said... "Come out from amongst them" and to "resist all evil".

I agree 100%. And I had never heard that he was a buisiness partner with Charles Taylor. I'll have to google that up and put it in my little bag of links to the bizzare.

Read Revelation... When Christ returns, He clearly states and outlines what He will do. Do you see Christ killing anyone ?

Governments are set up by God and we are to support God AND the Government He sets up. Governments rightously kill. Do we still support them? When is the ONLY time we do not support the Government?

Pat and fatwa? Oh pleassssssssssse!!

Hmmmmm. He's a religious leader who overly mixes his religion with his politics, and he's calling for someone other than himself to carry out an assassination. That's a fatwa in my books. Plain and simple. In Pat's dreams, he's a Christian cleric. Otherwise, he would carry out the assassination himself, then he'd simply be a murderer... although one with a reasonably defensible case. That's the only way I can respect someone issuing a edict for an assassination... if they then follow through and do it themselves. If he hasn't got the cojones to head down to Venezuela and follow through on his own fatwa he should keep his mouth shut.

Oh, I have read it. Christ is not back, and Pat Robertson nor anyone else has been authorised by Jesus to kill anyone! Not even in the book of revelation.

I do not think that God wanted his people to support the Nazi government.

I do not think that we support a government when it goes against the law of God. Murder just happens to be in the top ten....read Exodus 20.

But, I go again back to the fact that Pat Robertson is NOT the government. His job; what he is paid for; what he was called by Jesus to do, is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that all men can be saved by the Blood of Jesus Christ.

because Taylor was a God-fearing Baptist defending his country against Muslims rebels.

/sarcasm

Maybe it had something to do with Pat's sweetheart stake in Liberian mining operations. He certainly didn't mind Taylor's role as a money launderer for al-Qa'ida.

Pat needs to go.

"I do not think that God wanted his people to support the Nazi government."

Exactly!

"I do not think that we support a government when it goes against the law of God."

Exactly!

"But, I go again back to the fact that Pat Robertson is NOT the government."

IF God appointed him...its not for me to say one way or another. IF he is right or wrong is not for me to say unless he is OBVIOUSLY wrong.

"is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that all men can be saved by the Blood of Jesus Christ."

If you have read Hebrews 1 and do not believe in 'Dispensationalism' then I don't know how I could make you 'see'.

See what? That the 10 commandments are a "fluid document"?

I wont give the guy a break. Telling a Polish joke isn't PC. Calling for murder is a crime. "Not being aware" isn't an acceptable excuse.

I think Pat has been reading our comments! He apologized! I am proud of him. I hope he publically apologizes on the show tomorrow.

Quote:

"Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologize for that statement. I spoke in frustration that we should accommodate the man who thinks the U.S. is out to kill him."
