In Poland, Kaczynski and Tusk Are Even

(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Two presidential candidates are tied for first place in Poland, according to a poll by Ipsos. 24 per cent of respondents would vote for Warsaw mayor Lech Kaczynski of the Law and Justice Party (PiS), while 24 per cent would support Civic Platform (PO) leader Donald Tusk.

Former prime minister and current Diet speaker Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) is third with 19 per cent, followed by Self-Defence of the Polish Republic (SRP) leader Andrzej Lepper with 12 per cent.

Support is lower for Centre (C) party senator Zbigniew Religa, Marek Borowski of the Social Democracy of Poland (SDP), Jaroslaw Kalinowski of the Peasant’s Party (PSL), independent candidate Janusz Korwin-Mikke, Maciej Giertych of the League of Polish Families (LPR) and Maria Szyszkowska of the Anti-Clerical Party of Progress "Reason" (APPR).

SLD member Aleksander Kwasniewski has been Poland’s head of state since 1995. The election is scheduled for Oct. 9. If no candidate garners more than 50 per cent of all cast ballots, a run-off would take place on Oct. 23.

Kaczynski has served as the capital’s head of government since 2002. In 2001, Tusk was one of the co-founders of the PO.

I have to say, I supported Kaczynski until recently, when he allegedly said that if he is president he will never allow a flat tax, which PO strongly supports.

Same with me :-)

And he said it in fact, not just "allegedly".

May we assume Tusk is a Republican? Or maybe an Alabama alum?

The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa in that state. Students, graduates, athletic teams are sometimes known as "Tuskers" and elephant imagery abounds around the campus. "Alum" is short for "alumnus."
