CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A convicted murderer who is serving a life sentence without parole has won a $50,000 lawsuit.

Mark Allen Harris is serving his time in West Virginia. He sued the Kanawha County Judicial Annex in 2002 when he fell out of the back of a regional jail van, breaking bones in his face and knocking out some teeth.

Monday, a jury awarded him $30,000 for past mental and physical pain and suffering; $10,000 for annoyance and inconvenience and another $10,000 for loss of enjoyment of life.

The fall also resulted in the delay of his sexual assault trial. He was later convicted. Harris had previously been found guilty of killing a 2-year-old and escaping from a jail.

This seems right to me. When you are incarcerated, you are a ward of the state and they are responsible for your safety. Also, this occured before he was found guilty.

Too bad they can't give his award to the victim's family. Won't do much to ease the pain, but it is something anyway.

Correction, his lawyer has won a $50,000 lawsuit. Does anybody honestly think that this scum is going to see one penny of that money?

If you fall out of a vehicle while it is moving, you deserve what you get; when you do it as a child murderer awaiting trial on sexual assault and as a prisoner, oh well.

This is the stupidest thing I've read all year.

Too bad the van wasn't going faster when he fell out.

I'd like to see the victims take every penny. And then some.

Haven't states enacted laws in recent times that state that a prisoner,if able to do so,is obliged to pay for his imprisonment?

At $100/day,that's less than 2 years of room and board. So,there goes his cigarette money!
