Cool stuff.

This level of effort for noise reduction should be in all segments of aviation. The main political objection to airports is noise, and fighting the locals can be incredibly difficult.

And as Boeing and GE are demonstrating, it need not be.

When I was an aerodynamicist at a major jet engine manufacturer 20 years ago, we had exactly one guy in the acoustics group. Basically he just ordered noise suppressing nozzles, and that was his job in life.

But obviously that is no longer the case. Which is great.

I have a summer place way up in the mountains. It is on the flight path south about 60 miles from Seattle. The big jets from Seatac or the military from McChord are not much of a noise problem. However, the small general aviation planes are a noisy pain in butt. Especially when they decide to practice stalls or circle time after time.

Why can't the smaller planes be quieter? I would never be able to operate a car that made that much noise and disturbed that many people, so why are the damn things so noisy?

Funny how science is driven by demand. Always has been. Which is why some fields grow and others languish even though, abstractly, each is of the same worth.

I don't have a problem with environmental concerns, but, at what cost ? the cost of jobs ? our economy ?
That is something that is lost with the EnviroWackos.
I congratulate Boeing and all of the other Aerospace companies that are trying to do their best to protect and help the environment, as long as the cost and development does not break the bank.
I also had a thought, that in someways, the technology that is being developed during researching ways to help the environment, could have surprises as in the famous EURIKA moments.
The liberals are all stuck on this mantra that the Republicans/Conservatives don't want to protect the environment, and just want to pollute, and are greedy, that is not the case.
I believe that most of us Republicans/Conservatives are responsible and care about our communities, and the environment ( just compare our communities to some liberal communities and you can see yourself, and it has nothing to do with money ) .... but, we want to protect our environment, and keep jobs, and keep the economy going.
The first real enviromental President was Theodore Roosevelt, and he was ..... ( and the liberals cough, cough, ) a REPUBLICAN.

I think Boeing has succeeded in building a plane that meets the world's strictest noise emission rule, the Quota Count 2 standard used by the British Aviation Authority at British airports, without compromising engine performance or fuel efficiency. As such, this means the 777-300ER with the new nacelles could operated out of London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports literally 24 hours a day with no restrictions.
