Oh dear, I guess I'll never be governor general. Darn, and I thought I had many of the qualifications, too.
I'm female -- a good thing. And I'm a journalist -- which also seems to be a good thing. I've always wanted to travel in the Arctic and I even live west of Quebec, which is where the next governor general following the newly appointed Michaelle Jean will have to come from.
But sadly, I'm not an immigrant. I'm not a visible minority.
And, even worse, I don't represent the "new" Canada. I'm definitely "old" Canada, so please forgive me if the last week's events leave me feeling somewhat left out.
We've been hearing an awful lot about the "new" Canada lately -- ever since Prime Minister Paul Martin announced Madame Jean, a CBC broadcaster born in Haiti, would be replacing Adrienne Clarkson whose term is up.
Let me get one thing straight: I have absolutely nothing against Michaelle Jean. She appears to be exactly the kind of person the job requires -- outgoing, personable and dedicated.
It was the reaction to the appointment, not the lady herself, that shocked me.
She "embodies the new face of Canada," burbled the Toronto Star. She is "a poster child for modern Canada," according to the National Post. And our sister paper, the London Free Press, declared: "Now, three of the last five governors general have been women, which is more representative of a new Canada that encourages equality, rewards aspiration and welcomes the world."
Excuse me, but what exactly is this "new" Canada? And what was wrong with the "old" Canada?
The feeling has been growing in me for quite some time -- long before Jean's appointment -- that there is indeed a "new" Canada out there and that I am not terribly welcome in it.
City people
For one thing, I'm white. And my ancestors came here many generations ago -- another negative.
I do not live in a major city -- and in the "new" Canada, only city people seem to be considered appropriate.
Never mind that one-third of Canadians do not live in a major city and don't want to. Never mind also that all of us are immigrants of one sort or another.
In the "old" Canada, you could live where you liked and if you didn't speak another language, nobody minded. You could be as redneck or as left-wing or as wishy-washy as you wished and people would leave you alone.
People who know the history of their country before 1950 remember that in the "old" Canada, soldiers were soldiers and everyone knew what they did for a living.
In the "new" Canada, however, we don't have warriors; we have peacekeepers who go around begging everyone else in the world to be good. And we go into shock when the chief of defence staff suggests that soldiers are in the business of killing. ("Old" Canadians, meanwhile, were cheering.)
No, in the "new" Canada, a real Canadian must live in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood in the inner city, speak at least two languages -- or more if possible -- and aspire to life in a high-rise condo tower with a population density approaching that of Hong Kong.
The fact that you could probably put an entire African village in my backyard or those of my neighbours is practically a matter of shame in the "new" Canada where less really is more.
But the big difference I see in the "new" Canada is the intolerance.
In the "old" Canada, Canadians were ready to accept whatever wave of immigration was breaking on our shores at any given time. We have taken in the world for decades and excuse me, London Free Press, we have always encouraged equality, rewarded aspiration and welcomed the world.
Now, however, I get the distinct impression that we "old" Canadians would be doing everyone a favour if we just packed up and moved to, say, the U.K. or the so-called "red states" in the U.S. which voted solidly Republican last year.
In the supposedly welcoming "new" Canada, we are dinosaurs.

And, you know what, pretty much all of francophone Quebec, except for the Action Democratique guys (if I remember their name correctly), who're alright in my books.

Newsbrief: Canadians Smuggling Marijuana in Garbage Exports to United States
More garbage news. Another smuggling scheme went down the tubes last week when US Customs inspectors in Port Huron, Michigan, found a ton of Canadian weed hidden in a shipment of Toronto garbage destined for a Michigan landfill. The contraband was concealed behind trash, but revealed after a gamma-ray scanner showed anomalies in the cargo, according to Customs spokesperson. The driver, a 37-year-old Indian national, was arrested.
The garbage truck bust has been latched upon by foes of Canadian garbage imports, the Toronto Globe & Mail reported, citing one garbage import opponent, Michigan State Representative Kathleen Law, who pronounced herself shocked that such an amount of pot was found "in just one truck." Law saw a lesson in the discovery. "This just underscores that trash from Canada leaves us open to this kind of illegal activity. We must pass legislation and we must regulate the bridge. It's just out of control. This is scary."

Officials Seize Nearly One Ton of Illegal Drugs in Canadian Trash Truck
Nearly one ton of marijuana was found buried in a truckload of garbage crossing the Blue Water Bridge, entering Michigan from Toronto on September 24. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents found about 1,900 pounds of the drug packed in 59 plastic bags and hockey equipment duffel bags, making this one of the biggest drug busts in recent Michigan history. Law enforcement officials value the drug’s street value at approximately $9 million. This was the second time a truck carrying Canadian trash was caught smuggling a large quantity of drugs across the border.
Local Officials Put Out Trash Truck Fire on Blue Water Bridge
In September, a garbage truck heading from Toronto to Wayne County was on fire when it attempted to cross the Blue Water Bridge. The fire required 8,000 gallons of water and one and a half hours to douse. In addition to the time and materials spent by local, state and federal employees to put out the fire, a large amount of hazardous and toxic waste was expelled, all on the deck of one of the busiest border crossings in the United States. Audaciously, the very same truck returned just five hours later and tried to cross the border again, this time leaking wet garbage all over the bridge, which had to be cleaned up by HAZMAT crews in Port Huron.
Canadian Trash Truck Arrives in Michigan Dripping Blood
Last October, a Canadian trash truck from Toronto was denied entry into Michigan because it contained broken bags of untreated blood and hospital waste. The truck was literally dripping blood and leaking contaminants. This was in direct violation of Michigan and Ontario law, which requires medical waste to remain contained in secure containers and that non-decontaminated medical waste not get mixed with other waste.
Canadian Trash Trucks Carry Radiological and Medical Waste into Michigan
U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow authored legislation earlier this year to ensure that the Ambassador and Blue Water bridges be equipped with detection equipment called portals and that staff be trained to use them. These portals search for the presence of radiological and nuclear materials and weapons; trucks found with radioactive cargo are not allowed into Michigan. As a result of these searches, truck loads of trash are regularly sent back to Canada. These portals were installed in June -- we may never know how much radioactive waste was dumped in Michigan before then.
I recently told a Canadian pilot I'd met that Canada once had one of the world's top five air forces and navies, and he reacted in shock and disbelief. I had to find pictures on the net to convince him that Canada had operated aircraft carriers, once upon a time, but in the memory of living men.
This year, the Danes planted their flag on Canadian Hans Island, and Canadian Forces can't even get there to put a flag of their own up, or afford a flag to put there. Two hundred miles of fishing and oil exploration go with the uninhabitable ocean rock. It's probably better off in Danish hands.
The national health and Quebecois graft together have sucked everything out of what was fifty years ago a First World power. It's appropriate that the Governor General should be Haitian, because Haiti is the model to which New Canada seems to aspire.
