...we had to walk across the living room to change the TV channel.

I still do. Threw my remote in the lake.

> And that has technologists worried

Then we'd better not mention to them the current debate
over leap seconds.

This is so stupid! How does cutting an hour off in the morning and adding it to the evening "save energy?"

If DST is such a good thing, why not just have it year round and leave the clocks alone??? And if it's not, then why are we messing with our clocks twice a year anyway?

Daylight Savings Time is the most idiotic concept ever invented!

For just the reason you stated! Think about it: fewer people are up early in the day than at the dinner hour. Fewer people =less energy. It makes a LOT of sense.

"Back when I was a kid, we didn't have clocks, just hourglasses. At the time change, we'd either leave them alone for an hour, or turn them over twice, depending on the season."

Luxury! In my day, we had a sundial. Every spring, I'd have to stand outside with a lantern for an hour to set the stupid thing forward, then in the fall I'd have to hold a tarp over it for an hour to set it back.

I AM an earlt riser, but I love the idea of having more daylight at the end of the day. I get up at 5AM M-F and go to work. What do I care if it's dark outside then?

Win98 likely won't get one, and don't be too surpised if
Win2K doesn't either, which means users (who notice) will
need to manually make adjustments on both the old and new
DST dates.

I support switching to UTC, period, and let local
establishments set their schedules as they see fit.

your VCR or DVD recorder could start recording shows an hour late.

The horror... the horror

Damn. I thought we had 8000 years before we would face another Y*K problem. Well, better stock up on batteries, ammunition and potable water again.

I used to be on a calendrics listserv. One claim there is that DST did not save energy. Apparently consumption was as high before as after the change. Paul Harvey says DST saves neither daylight nor time. Surely what energy you might save in the evening, you will lose in the morning.

I was thinking the same, another Y2K disaster. How we survived that I don't know. Must have been a miracle.
