GOP asks Dems for beer money

Republicans threaten lawsuit over $5,000 misdirected donation

Associated Press

GREENVILLE--South Carolina Republicans say the Democrats need to stop dragging their feet and return the beer money they are owed. Democrats say the check's in the mail.

The latest dispute between the two political parties began in April when St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch Co. wrote a $5,000 check intended for the South Carolina Republican Party.

Instead, the envelope was addressed to the state Democratic Party, which promptly deposited the money.

Katja Zastrow, Anheuser-Busch's regional director of governmental affairs in Washington, said in an e-mail statement that the check went astray "through a series of administrative oversights."

She said they are working with both parties to resolve the situation.

Democrats say that they have sent a refund check to Anheuser-Busch.

"Nobody should expect us to write a check to the Republican Party," said Lachlan McIntosh, the Democratic Party's executive director.

The GOP said the refund came only after it threatened a lawsuit.

State Republican Party Chairman Katon Dawson said they want the money back and that any further delays are unacceptable.

But McIntosh said a July 27 letter from Dawson to Democratic Chairman Joe Erwin was the first time the matter had been brought to the party's attention.

In the letter, Dawson wrote that "this careless error was made over three months ago and has yet to be rectified."

McIntosh wrote Dawson on Tuesday, saying party officials "are in the process of refunding the money directly to the company," which would then send the Republican Party another check.

Zastrow did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Friday.

I thought that it was illegal to sign your name on a check made out to somebody else, and then deposit the check. Isn't that forgery?

It's not clear in the article who the check was made out to,only that it was intended for the Republicans.

I don't think depositing the check would have required a signature so forgery may not be involved.

If it was simply stamped on the back for deposit only (as I am sure it was), the bank taking the deposit would have responsible for ensuring that the check was indeed made out to the depositor before taking it. I think that the bank, therefore, is responsible to make good on it. Obviously, A-B does not want this to be a big stink, and the Dems have got nothing at all to lose to make this into a big 'brew-ha-ha"...

A-B can resolve this by going to the bank and stating the bank misappropriated the deposit; they should have a copy of the cashed check in their records...

Make the Dems issue a check straight to the republicans so it looks like the Dems are supporting us.

If a check made out to my neighbor was sent to me and was cashed by me I suspect I would be arrested and charged with theft. rats must be so proud of their party.

I don't think it's the issue of the dems not wanting to give a check directly to the Republicans, it's that the dems don't have the money. The state democrat party is broke. Also explains why they would cash the check.

Nothing is illegal anymore....... Murder....rape.....child abuse......treason......etc.

You just have to be a celebrity, a Democrat or a member of the MSM and you can get away with anything!

That's why liberals are so terrified of conservative judges.

They might actually one day have to face the law, rather than getting around it.

But that might cost them $30 or more.
