Don't prejudge Muslims (BARF ALERT)
Chicago Sun-Times letter to the editor ^ | 8/03/05 | M. Ali Khan

Posted on 08/03/2005 10:46:00 AM PDT by Chi-townChief

While I applaud the national ''Not in the Name of Islam'' campaign condemning terrorism, it is a sad commentary about America. Neither Christians nor Jews feel compelled to take out newspaper ads declaring their faith's innocence whenever acts of violence and extremism are carried out by individuals or groups who share their religion. And that's simply because we are enlightened enough as a nation to know that you can't condemn Christianity just because a few Christians committed the Oklahoma City bombing terrorism.

The Not in the Name of Islam campaign is being sponsored principally by Muslim Americans who immigrated to this country beginning in the '60s when Robert Kennedy declared that America's fight against racism included opening our shores to people of color. Knowing the atrocities committed against blacks in the name of Christianity, African-American Muslims feel no similar defensiveness about Islam.

But while all Muslims in America have felt the sting of stereotyping and discrimination since 9/11, the immigrant Muslim community has had to live in fear in this land where they have excelled as citizens. They have felt the full brunt of the war on terrorism: automatic suspects.

Thus, the Not in the Name of Islam campaign is really a plea. It's asking America to have the good and common sense not to judge an entire religion by the acts of a few. It's asking America in advance not to lose its cool if another terrorist attack should strike this nation -- as we shamefully did in locking down Japanese Americans in World War II. It's asking that religious prejudice not be in the name of protecting America.

M. Ali Khan, executive director, American Muslim Council, Lincoln Park

I don't think Muslims are automatically "people of color" and I know that Robert Kennedy had some bad first-hand experience with a Muslim. And I don't believe that the OKC bombing was done in the name of Christianity.

McVeigh was a Christian? I thought he was an atheist. I guess this reporter doesn't feel facts are important.

It's SO national that I've never heard of it. But, just like democRATS, I guess they haven't gotten their message out.

I'd say that people in the twin towers and Pentagon and airplanes on 9/11 felt the "full brunt" of the war on terrorism -- not whining, sniveling people like Mr. Khan.

Profile by statistics and if the results are that 99% of terrorists bombings are carried out by Muslims then they should be singled out and stop wasting time searching little old ladies in wheelchairs and six year olds holding a stuffed animal.

We should be allowed to rule out the obvious in our search for those who wish to due us harm in great numbers.

For what it's worth, McVeigh was a member of the Christian Identity movement. He had ties to Elohim City (the associated neo-nazi compound, in Oklahoma, I believe).

If you don't know what the Christian Identity movement is, consider yourself lucky. Christian Identity is a label applied to a wide variety of loosely-affiliated groups and churches with a racist, perverted Christian theology: Aryan blood purity, British Israelism and militant white supremacist spliced with a very unChristian Christianity, all hastily slapped together into one delightfully offensive package.

At best they are white separatists. At worst, they are rabid neonazis, who venerate Hitler, hate Jews and Catholics and blacks and HIspanics and (list goes on and on). etc. etc.

They are not Christian. Unless you believe that purging all non Aryan peoples from the earth or deporting them is a critical tenet of Christianity, that only Aryan Anglo-Saxons can be true Christians, etc. etc.. Which I doubt many true Christians do. ;)

McVey was an apostate Catholic. He refused all ministration from priests until the last night. Don't know how that last encounter turned out.

We should have the complete freedom to respond as necessary should another attack occur

Actually even IF McVeigh claimed to be a Christian it wouldn't change a thing. After all McVeigh did not bomb the building in the name of Christ. However Islamic terrorism always claims to commit their vile acts in the name of Islam. Hence the author cannot try to place a link between Christianity and Islam.

And let me explain further. If a Muslim robs me I wouldn't call him an 'Islamic robber.' I'd just call him a robber. HOWEVER if he robbed me, and said he did so in the Name of Islam, then he would automatically be an Islamic robber. Same thing if a Southern Baptist robbed me. IF he just robbed me I would term him simply as a thug. However if he robbed me based on his religions beliefs, then I can correctly call him a Christian thug or a Southern Baptist highwayman, or a Bible Bandit!

All terrorism committed by muslims is done in the name of Islam, hence it is in essence Islamic Terrorism.

The OKC bombing was against the most basic tenets of Christianity. 9/11 was in accord with the most basic tenets of Islam.

"Prohet make war on the unbelievers and hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home, and evil fate." Sura 9:73.

"Believers, make war with the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them. Know that God is with the righteous." Sura 9:123.
