Tancredo hits the road

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Rep. Tom Tancredo hoped to overcome his recent controversy and get back onto his immigration message today, when he brought his traveling road show to South Carolina.

It's the third early presidential primary state Tancredo has visited this year, as he toys with the idea of a 2008 race.

Tancredo was scheduled to speak today night before hundreds of members of the Fraternal Order of Police at a hall outside Charleston.

He hopes to keep the topic to immigration reform, but he is still facing an international outcry over his recent comments suggesting the United States could target Muslim holy sites like Mecca if radical Islamic terrorists set off nuclear attacks in U.S. cities.

Some critics have demanded an apology or called for Tancredo to resign from Congress.

Tancredo has dismissed those calls and defended his comments to a Florida radio talk show host last month, saying he was merely thinking out loud about ways to deter a future terrorist attack.

Spokesman Will Adams said Tancredo planned to move past the controversy during the South Carolina trip. Tancredo has been visiting important presidential primary states in hopes of getting other would-be contenders to focus on his crusade against illegal immigration. If nobody does, he has said he might mount his own candidacy.

After Iowa and New Hampshire — two states Tancredo already has visited — South Carolina is considered the next make-or-break stop on the traditional presidential primary season calendar.

I hope he's doing everything legal while he does this travelling. I'm not in any way suggesting he isn't, but you know his enemies will look for anything to bring him down.

I'm currently working on a "Rumsfeld/Tancredo/'08" bumper sticker.

I thought of bombing Mecca as one of our targets in this fight when we first went over there. I take it we can't do that?!

Tancredo is a bomb thrower, and does not have the communication discipline to sniff the Presidency, much lesss the Republican nomination. I lost respect for him with the "nuke Muslim cities" comment. It is unhelpful and silly.

It's not about what he said if we are nuked, it's all about his position to secure our borders. That is why the Democrates and the Republicans will use this against him. Won't work though.

Tancredo's Mecca statement considered along with the factual background as it emerges from the London Bombings raise a question which hasn't been answered to my satisfaction. By operating in cell under the semi-direction of Al Queda, the terrorists give the nations that support them an out publicly. There can be no doubt that Pakistan is behind the London bombings. No, not the head of the government but enough of the power structure so as to make little difference. The Pakistanis allow enough of the terrorist element to operate so as not to get removed, at least to this point in time.

My question, of course, is what can our response be if we are hit by a terrorist attack involving substantial loss of life and Dr. Khan or the Madrassas of Pakistan are shown to have been involved. How would we sell a major retaliation to the world that does not even understand Afghanistan or Iraq. Glib answers (Bomb the B@stards) seem satisfying but they don't work when there are 1.3 billion Muslims, 2/3's of who would cheer a nuclear terrorist attack on America.

Nevermind the decades of death-to-America saber-rattling from Islamists across the world.

Sure...Tancredo's remarks were bombastic, but it was spit in the ocean of the venom that Islamist politicians have hurled at the U.S. since Jimmy Goober disgraced the Oval Office.

I think the London events were done by lightweights, possibly offshoots of Al Queda. If I was a betting man, I'd say more spectacular events are to come in the U.S.

No doubt of that. But when you're dealing with foreign policy and your nation is at war, there has to be a better reason to say something than "They've said terrible things to us! Let's give it right back to them!" There has to be some kind of strategy.

I think Tancredo enjoys the limelight of being a nationally known Congressman a little too much, and has learned what his supporters want to hear. It's not responsible and it shows a lack of discipline.

I think there has already been an answer to this. In the case of Afghanistan there was sufficient evidence that the Taliban were supporting Al Qaeda so we put them out of business.

If we can collect a sufficient amount of information on Pakistan ... and Pakistan is indeed supporting Al Qaeda ... then we should do likewise.

I don't believe the president of Pakistan supports Al Qaeda. I believe that he is being just efficient enough to keep the USA reasonably happy and keep his foes from becoming unreasonably angry.

In this situation realpolitik will win out and we will continue to do nothing for fear of what will happen if we do anything.

Unfortunately the same will be true of Iran and North Korea and China and Russia until it is too late.

I would agree there must be some kind of strategy, but I'm not seeing anything coherent. I can't tell you how sick I am of watching all the atrocities committed by Islamofascists with a looping soundtrack from the White House bleating "Islam is a religion of peace...Islam is a religion of peace..." over and over and over again.

I consider Tancredo's remarks to be pretty much on par with the post-December 7th Dolittle raid on Tokyo. It didn't do much in the overall scheme of things, but it sure as hell put the enemy on notice that, yes, we have the capacity to go medieval on their asses.

If you ask me, what Tancredo said is perhaps the only thing the Islamofascists understand. Every nicety of civilization is just weakness in their eyes. The sooner we appreciate that simple fact, the sooner we'll wage an effective war on terrorists.

It's not responsible and it shows a lack of discipline.

The words your searching for are lack of political correctness, political compassion, and politically offensive language.

After 911, most American's are not really in the mood for sugar coated politics, given the fact that our own intelligence has said, "We will be hit again, and hit hard".

But again, those in America that seem offended by what Tancredo said about the U.S. being nuked, are more concerned about losing their benefits they have gained by cheap illegal labor.

Yep, and it does have everyone on both side of the issue talking about the possibility. Hopefully, it will open a few eyes, so if he did nothing else, he gave voice to what many people are thinking.

The complaints regarding Tancredo's commments - irresponsible, dangerous, unnecessarily inflammatory - are identical to the invective hurled at Reagan for his many comments regarding the soviet union. Deep down inside I worried his detractors might be right, until we all saw the result.

Tancredo is no Reagan, but I think a comparison here is valid.

and has learned what his supporters want to hear.

Tancredo has been beating the illegal immigration issue for years while almost no politician has. Whether it's been people listening to him or have just woken up to the fact we're being flooded with them and now are PO'd this has become a big issue in this country. He has gained a lot of supporters for good reason. It's not him that is changing his tune at all for anybody since he has remained consistent in what he's been saying. It's others changing to his point of view.

As far as his "bomb Mecca" statement goes, I'm glad he said it. Only one with enough balls to do so with all those panty waists in DC. The Islamofascists never say anything wrong.

Agree. Remember when Reagan was doing a voice test the oval office, and said words to the effect, "Within a few moments our warheads will be striking Moscow".

Sure, he said it jokingly, while at the same time, his finger was never far from the nuclear trigger.

It finally came to me---the solution to all the illegals problem:

allow Mexico to be taken over by Fidel Castro's communists.

The left NEVER wants anyone to leave a communist paradise! Just look at how hard they worked to get young Elian returned!
