Thank You (from a defeated VPC)

Dear Violence Policy Center Action Network Member:

Last Friday, by a vote of 65 to 31, the U.S. Senate passed S. 397, a bill shielding the gun industry from certain types of civil litigation. Click here to see the Reuters story on the vote which cites the VPC:

http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=politicsNews&storyID=2005-07-29T234038Z_01_N29544354_RTRIDST_0_POLITICS-CONGRESS-GUNS-DC.XML

Thank you to everyone who called and e-mailed their Senators to urge them to vote against this bill. To see how your Senators voted, click here:

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00219

The bill will now move to the U.S. House of Representative--which has passed similar legislation in the past--for action. Following Senate passage Friday, the VPC stated:

"This bill is built on a corrupt foundation of lies that will leave a legacy of pain and suffering. Proponents claimed that the bill was necessary to protect our armed forces from having to buy their guns from foreign manufacturers--but the bulk of U.S. military and law enforcement sidearms already come from foreign gunmakers. They claimed that the gun industry is the most heavily regulated industry in America when, in fact, they are one of only two industries exempt from federal health and safety regulation. They claimed that it's an industry in distress, yet their own financial documents prove otherwise. Today's vote is a go-ahead by the U.S. Senate for a reckless, cynical, unregulated industry to sell their increasingly lethal products at tremendous cost to the general public."

While disappointed with the outcome of the Senate vote, we will continue to work with our supporters in the House of Representatives to expose the true NRA/gun industry agenda driving this bill.

Thank you, again, for all of your efforts.

"This bill is built on a corrupt foundation of lies that will leave a legacy of pain and suffering."

I guess the lie on their part of blood in the streets with the sunset of the Assault Weapons Ban doesn't count.

"Today's vote is a go-ahead by the U.S. Senate for a reckless, cynical, unregulated industry to sell their increasingly lethal products at tremendous cost to the general public."

Reckless and UNREGULATED? I guess the BATF has been put out of business. Try and purchase a weapon without a background check at and guns shop.

It amazes me these folks (VPC) are still in business. I wonder how many tried to purchase in the days following 9-11.

Typical from VPC, there's a lie in basically every sentence. I'll just pick on one:

They claimed that the gun industry is the most heavily regulated industry in America when, in fact, they are one of only two industries exempt from federal health and safety regulation.

Then again, it's one of only one industry in the United States where they can only sell to federally licensed dealers, and every transaction from those dealers requires permission from the federal government in order to proceed with the transaction.

Nope, not regulated at all. Why, teddy bears are more regulated than guns are!!!!!

I guess I just don't get it... Soft White Underbelly is a Blue Oyster Cult reference, right?

Yeah, that was their first name. They used to use that name to play in small venues after they made it big.
