JOURDANTON, Texas -- Some city officials in Jourdanton, Texas, are outraged that a public works supervisor ordered employees to drown six stray dogs at the city sewer plant, rather than having the animals properly euthanized.
For punishment, the supervisor was ordered to attend classes with animal control officers.
City councilman Darrell Richter said the workers took the dogs from the pound to the sewer plant and dropped their cages into the water.
A child saw the drownings and told his mother, who complained.
Richter told the San Antonio Express-News that he's disgusted by the incident and upset with the supervisor getting "a little slap on the hand." He said a crime has been committed and should be dealt with in a more serious manner.
Thanks for posting the Texas code on it.
All but one of my pets has been a rescue of one type or another. I look into their faces and nope - could not put them through the agony of death by drowning. Couldn't do it to a dog I didn't know, either. Just not wired to cause suffering like that.
You guys just keep making my point.
Human life is sacrosanct. Animals have zero rights and any attempt to give them rights is based on emotion rather than logic. Why should you not be able to kill a dog, if you can kill the mouse chewing though food containers in your cupboard?
It is your types that want to equate animals with humans who's actions eventually leads to unspeakable acts committed upon people as the value of human life becomes meaningless. It is you who stand in the way of research to help people at the expense of "torturing" animals.
I can't believe so many "conservatives" are emotional PC animal rights nuts.
Really? I must have missed your point.
How does directing your attention to the specific Texas State Law this municipal employee violated "make your point"?
I agree Andy.. I almost had to pop a nitro under my tongue after reading some of the knuckle dragging posts on this thread.
Maybe we can get you some smelling salts so you don't faint. Girly man.
"I can't believe so many "conservatives" are emotional PC animal rights nuts."
I don't think "conservative" = cruelty. We are far from PC. PETA is PC and they can be cruel. I just think most conservatives are family loving and dogs are certainly a big part of our families.
I agree he is scum.
But a minor sort of scum.
Just a fact.
Don't shoot the messenger.
ROFL!
""Have you heard that 2 PETA employees were found in possession of euthanisia materials and putting down healthy animals in North Carolina and dumping the bodies in dumpsters behind grocery stores? Possession of these materials by anyone other than veteranians in North Carolina is not permitted. Hope these employees spend a lot of time behind bars.""
Yes, it's why I made the comment. Finally the truth behind the shakedown has become known
Yes I do find cruelty outrageous. Thanks for the compliment. If you can not see drowning as a slow, cruel death nothing I could say would change your view. But it is not a death I would wish for anyone or anything.
I am not an animal rights activist. I support medical research that uses the humane guidelines established by peer groups of veternarians and researchers. I do not think a man and a dog are equal. I know sometimes it is necessary to put down an animal. I eat meat and see nothing wrong with people hunting for food or to keep down the overpopulation of some species such as deer. I do support humane treatment of animals. We were not given the right to be cruel to fellow creatures. Treating an animal in a humane fashion and condemning unneccessary cruelty shows respect for God's creation.
And that makes it okay? I don't think that condoning the torture of animals somehow evens the score for the horror of abortion.
I think this has got to be a troll, but what the hell, I'll respond anyway.
Drowning is torture. Is that how you would like to go? That was what the outrage was all about. Not that the dogs were killed, but that they were unnecessarily tortured, and that the perpetrator was not punished.
Our society is so darn "sanitized" these days that a kid seeing a dog get killed is deemed scandalous.
Again. The outrage is not so much that a kid saw it, but that it happened at all. Anyway, seeing an animal tortured to death is not on any level going to be a good experience for a child.
No wonder the pacifist lefties are winning.
Respect for life, respect for the life of all God's creatures is a conservative value, not a leftie one. That doesn't mean you don't eat meat (although I don't) or don't put down stray dogs, but it should be done with the least amount of suffering possible.
Cruel treatment of animals always comes from only the lowest.
The person who drowned the dogs in TX needs to go to jail!
My heart is already broken tonight from the loss of my own pet. Our much beloved cocker spaniel died in her sleep last night. She was almost 14 years old.
I can't imagine hurting a dog. I also can't imagine letting a pet run loose or breed indiscriminately either. Poor doggies without loving families or homes and now drowned.
Sick person!
Both are wrong. I'm sure you know I was not advocating of excusing away either. We should show as much outrage, though, for the suffering of baby humans as we do for stray dogs.
Not according to every state and municipality in this country, and all other developed countries. You might not like the fact that it is against the law to torture animals, but it does mean that it is illegal to be cruel to animals. Drowning is cruelty. I suppose your objection to these laws is because you believe it's OK to torture any animal, even for fun. After all, you believe that it's your "right" to cause harm. So I guess lighting an animal on fire is OK, or pulling its limbs off or whatever other kind of deviant treatment is all right in your eyes.
These same laws also govern scientific research. Minimum standards and research necessity must be demonstrated and there are regulations in place, even for lab rats.
Like I said in my previous post, you have absolutely no respect for any life beyond your own. I am not some animal rights, PETA type. But someone who at least has the decency to know it is wrong to be cruel to animals unnecessarily.
