It's come down to discount cigarette bins and enormous signs urging customers to beat the tax.
The 75-cent cigarette "health impact fee" goes into effect Monday. No ands, ifs or butts about it.
While some people left gas stations and grocery stores with an armful of cartons Friday afternoon, most walked out with a pack or two.
It was the calm before the storm.

Roll your own. I can't stress enough how many have switched to this for a better cigarette that's about a quarter of the cost of name brands.

The 75-cent cigarette "health impact fee" goes into effect Monday. Why not call it what it is.............a discriminatory and extortionate TAX on a politically incorrect minority.

Around thirty bucks

Around fourty-five bucks

Between a buck fifty and three bucks

Between $12.99 (shown) and $25.00 (expensive stuff)
I'm doing about eight bucks per carton.

Gee, and to think this all started 25 or so years ago, with a simple request that in-flight smokers be assigned to a specific section of the plane.

The headline should read "Cigarette Smuggling Going Up On Monday".
As if organized crime need yet another profitable business set up on their behalf.

You got that right. I just bought a rolling machine, filter tipped papers, two packs of tobacco, two aluminum cigarette packs, a ceramic cig snuffer, two lighters thrown in gratis. Total cost, $31.00. All the makings for two cartons of cigs.
Brand name cigs cost $27.00 per carton at the cheapest rate here in SE Texas.
Roll yer own!

Organized crime has been doing this for at least 50 years. Also, if memory serves, a couple of years ago some arabs were busted running cigs from North Carolina factories to Chicago and New York. They were sending the profits to terrorist groups.

Of course, they'll blame smokers for this. When in reality, it's the high tax rates that's the cause.

But I thought the settlement with EVIL BIG TOBACCO was supposed to take care of the health care costs due to smoking. Also it really irritates me that the Gov of MN a Republican, doesn't have the balls to call his stupid tax a tax. I guess a "health impact fee" or whatever the he11 he calls it does not violate his no new taxes pledge. If this is the mainstream Republican Party, I don't think I'll belong.

I applaud you for rolling your own - though you could buy 2 cartons and have change for what 1 carton costs us.
As if the $$$s in Tobacco Money she got "for the state" when she was Attny General wasn't enough (and the WA Dims blew on everything and anything except what she claimed it was for), Gov Fraudoire and the Dim legislature raised the tax per pack on cigs by $.60 per pack on July 1 bringing the new cost per carton w the local tax at a discount cig store (about the same cost as Costco, which is about the least expensive around here) to $57.00 per carton. We already had one of the highest taxes in the nation on cigs (and alcohol and gas--they're trying to raise that, too), guess the Dims just didn't feel it was enough and wanted another $6.00 per carton.

You could also try to throw those theiving sh-theads out of office. It can be done. And you have my best wishes in doing so.
