Republican and Democratic senators on Friday worked to set a date for U.S. Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' confirmation hearing after an agreement to start the process on Sept. 6 collapsed.

"We thought we had an arrangement and it fell through," said Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican said in a brief interview outside the Senate chamber. "We are working on it."

So, we gotta listen to the dumorats for a full month whine and moan?

If the GOP had ANY Testicular fortitude they would say..."We start at 0800 on Aug 8th...if you are NOT there, tough"

Aholes-....where's the WoopA$$ Can??

No problem.

The Senators are all patriotic.

They all recognize that to delay an important nomination during this time of war would be treasonous.

I'm really confused how this works.. The chairman sets a date for the hearing, interested committee members show up, the interviewee shows up, questions are asked, everyone goes home.

What are the negotiating over? The color of flowers? Who's dresses each of the female senators get to have exclusive agreements with? Hello -- this is a dog and pony show. Schedule it, Mr. Specter, and they'll show up, or there will be loads of shots of empty committee chairs.

Here's a temporary solution:

O'Connor can go ahead and retire on schedule and we give Clarence Thomas an extra vote until the Senate gets their end of things wrapped up.

That might speed things up.

O'Conner will not retire until her seat is filled. That's why the Dums are doing this. She'll just be on the bench for a while longer and they know it so they are going to stall.

If Bush wants this over now, he will Recess Appoint Robert Bork until these hearings are held, and let O'Conner retire.

What do you mean "let O'Conner retire". She has already blown up this process by saying she would stay, "as long as it took." If you ask me, she had no business saying that. And I don't know what the President could do about it.

WHY did fall through????

Don't know. I'm watching Brit's show now to see if they talk about it during their roundtable.

You know, looking at this picture of Hatch, I'm thinking that if they ever make a movie of Tony Randall's life story, Orin is a natural for the part . . . (and Fred Thompson would be a good fit for Phil Fulmer, the Tennessee football coach).

O'Conner's husband is ill. She would welcome leaving early.

What part of "we are the majority" do the Republicans in the Senate not understand?
